No longer a Cav not

STEVE KERR'S THREE POINTS

Player of the Week
Kobe Bryant – Kobe's improvement this season has come in his recognition of when to take over and when to involve his teammates. After the Lakers had lost seven straight games, Bryant decided it was time to take over. He scored 65 points against Portland by making 23 of 39 shots. Kobe's 50-point follow-up helped his team beat Minnesota for its second win in a row.

Performance of the Week
Allen Iverson – A.I. smoked the Suns for 44 points on 16-of-22 shooting and also found time to hand out 15 assists in his best game as a Nugget. The win over the NBA's second-best team was a huge confidence boost for Denver, which has won four straight games.

Game of the Week
Wednesday: Dallas Mavericks at Cleveland Cavaliers – The Mavs take the NBA's best record into Cleveland, where they'll try to beat the league's hottest team. With Larry Hughes at the point and Sasha Pavlovic at the two, Cleveland has revamped its backcourt with great success. The Cavaliers will find out just how good they really are as they try to defeat Dirk Nowitzki and company.

For most of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers haven't been taken very seriously by NBA fans as a championship contender. Not only did they look old and had trouble scoring, but LeBron James simply didn't look like himself as well.

James appeared tired and disinterested at times; his numbers were down, and his team didn't have any pop to it. Even though Cleveland was winning its share of games, it certainly didn't have the look of a great team.

In the last two weeks, though, everything has changed.

James is playing out of his mind, the team is moving the ball and knocking down shots, and suddenly this once-stodgy club is putting up numbers and blowing out teams. The Cavaliers have won eight in a row and have the look of a true contender in the Eastern Conference.

As a result, Cleveland moves up to the sixth spot in the latest Yahoo! Sports rankings (records and statistics are through March 18):
