Fantasy Fallout: NBA Depth Charts and Free Agency
The NBA lockout has left us with a 16-day period between the opening of camps and free agency (Dec 9) and the start of the regular season (Dec 25). Depth charts are going to change quickly and often, and fantasy owners will have to react accordingly. A lot will happen in a short time and we'll be updating this page as details emerge with changes and reactions, as well as links to fallout and speculation. Note that some inconsequential deals will be reflected without analysis. Check back often and add your comments and/or questions below.

[Signed Richard Hamilton - Rip is a reasonable facsimile of the type of guard that the Bulls have needed alongside Derrick Rose, although the 33-year-old has seen his fantasy impact dwindle in recent years. He's made just 42% of his field goals over the past two seasons and provides very few useful numbers past some scoring and FT% help. There's a decent chance we'll see Rip shoot more threes with the Bulls, but he'll also sit regularly to allow Ronnie Brewer to play some defense and figures to stay fringey for fantasy purposes overall. [Signed Anthony Parker - All this does is cloud the potential for Daniel Gibson to actually do some things for fantasy owners. Parker was a starter in 65 of his 72 games last season, while Gibson started 15 of his 67 games. Buser]
[Waived Baron Davis - The Kyrie Irving era gets started immediately - technically it would have anyway, given Davis' back injury. Now we're locked in and the Cavs will look to consistently push the tempo with Irving, and he's got the ability to put up very solid fantasy numbers when it comes to scoring, FT%, threes, assists, and steals. You never have guarantees with rookies, but you can argue that Irving now belongs in the Rd7-8 draft range (current ADP 103.6). And don't forget Ramon Sessions on draft day, particulary in deep leagues - he needed only 26 minutes to average 13.3 points and 5.2 assists in 10-11 and we could see Irving and Sessions share the court at times. [Lost Caron Butler - Marion is looking at a lot of minutes between the two forward spots as it stands. Brewer will also have a shot to join the team's regular rotation - his defense and finishing ability are good fits. Buser]
[Lost Tyson Chandler - Brandan Haywood will reprise his role as the Mavs' starting center. He played very little behind Chandler last season but averaged 9.1 points on 56-percent shooting, 9.3 boards, and 2.1 blocks in 31 minutes during the 2009-10 season. Target him late for big man stats. Buser]
[Acquired Lamar Odom - Odom will have a familiar role with the defending champs as first big off the bench, and he'll be utilized as the matchup dictates. He'll give Dirk a rest at PF, shift to SF on occasion, and also match up with some unconventional centers when the situation is right. What Odom won't have in Dallas is the familiar upside of 30-plus starts that came when Andrew Bynum missed chunks of the season. Bump him down a bit on your draft board for that reason - in 47 games as a sub in 2010-11, Odom averaged 13 points, 1 three, 7.5 boards, and 2.7 assists in 29 minutes. This move also takes a bit of the shine off of Corey Brewer for deep-league purposes. Buser]
[Signed Vince Carter - If there's one thing we know about VC, it's that he sometimes needs everything to be just right for the numbers to come. It's hard to think of a better team setup than Dallas, so it's safe to upgrade Carter at least a bit from where you had him generally pegged as a free agent. No, I'm not going overboard here, but at worst he figures to be a solid late-round source of threes with steady minutes between SG and SF for the Mavs. Buser]

[Re-signed Nene Hilario - This really seemed like the best fit from the start. He'll be a huge part of the rebuit Nuggets moving forward and the No.1 wish for fanasy owners should be a career-high in minutes played (31 minutes per game in 10-11). He'll slide to PF as George Karl and the Nuggets want to get Timofey Mozgov involved. The minutes behind the two starters will be worth monitoring. Buser]

[Bought out Richard Hamilton - The Pistons finally parted ways with Rip, a step forward after taking two steps back to re-sign Prince. Ben Gordon's prospects suddenly looks a lot brighter and he's now in the conversation for Rd9-10, but Rodney Stuckey is also likely to spend time at SG this coming season. Stuckey finished 2010-11 in strong fashion (splits) and could surprise fantasy owners, provided he can get and stay on the same page with Lawrence Frank. Keep an eye on Brandon Knight in camp - he's a skilled offensive player and should have an opportunity for minutes, but his FG% and AST:TO could be real problem areas. Buser]

[Signed David West - West is a good fit for the Pacers and should help them improve their offensive efficiency, an area where the team really struggled in 2010-11. Keep West just inside your top 50, with a downgrade from his "usual" Rd3 standing because he's coming off ACL surgery and joining a new system that doesn't also feature Chris Paul. This should be a wash for where you've pegged Danny Granger's numbers - think a decrease in usage but an increase in quality of looks. Darren Collison certainly won't be hurt by the reunion with his former teammate, as West's mid-rage game is about as good as it gets at the PF position. Roy Hibbert figures to lose touches to West, so you have to hope he makes gains in boards and blocks if he's one of your draft targets. Buser]

[Signed Caron Butler - The ideal scenario here is that everyone gets familiar quickly and Butler eventually comes in around his career-highs in STL% and AST%. If the latter doesn't, then he's taking usage away from Griffin and Gordon, which isn't good for anyone. Butler is tough and smart and fills the team's last need position, however, so I'm certainly not going to call this a bad fit as it stands. The Clips will have a truly imposing (and more complementary) starting five once they are able to purge Kaman from the roster. Buser]
[Signed DeAndre Jordan - The Clips aren't going to pay Jordan $10 million this season to sit on the bench, so draft with confidence and know that Chris Kaman will play out the final season of his contract as a reserve if a suitable trade partner can't be found. Jordan is going to rebound, block shots, and lead the league in FG% if he shoots enough to qualify, but fantasy owners must account for his career mark of 41% (!) from the foul line. Buser]
[Signed Chauncey Billups - Billups joins one of the league's upwardly-mobile teams and gets to bask in the glow of the California sun while collecting his hefty paycheck, so there are worse fates. Obviously Mo Williams gets squashed here, even if Billups comes off the bench, and a timeshare at PG isn't going to help either player. As for the rest of the roster, nothing but good things can come from having so much quality PG play on one roster. Of course, a Chris Paul trade is still looming, right? Buser]

[Signed Troy Murphy - Murphy is fourth big on the depth chart and will at least see regular minutes to start the season, while Bynum serves his five-game suspension. Murphy averaged 14.6 points on 47% FG, 1.8 thress (38%), and 10.2 boards two seasons ago and then totaled just 466 minutes in 10-11, so it's something of a toss-up as to how well he'll perform. Deep-leaguers should certainly give him a look and watch the early box scores to see how Murph and McBob compare. One of them is going to end up with regular rotation spot. Buser]

Battier's ultra-efficent game is ideal alongside Miami's trio, and he should be good for his normal production in 25-30 minutes per game. Draft him late in roto leagues and target him heavily if you are employing a punt- points strategy in h2h. The signing also means that Mike Miller will struggle for minutes when healthy, and the Heat may now opt against bringing Mario Chalmers back, which would then put rookie Norris Cole (solid college numbers here) in line for regular-ish minutes. [Signed Eddy Curry - Curry scored at a good clip when he attempted a lot of shots as recently as five seasons ago. The fact that he did nothing - or nothing else, depending on how you look at it - to help his teams win basketball games, even at his best, means that he'll be relegated to garbage minutes throughout the season. But this is a no-risk move for the Heat and may eventually breathe new life into The Eddy Curry Line. Buser]
[Re-signed Mario Chalmers - Chalmers did average 1.3 threes and 1.1 steals in his 28 starts last season (26 minutes), but that wasn't not enough to offset 7.4 points and 2.8 assists. Chalmers will remain largely inconsequential here. Buser]

Williams can play either forward spot and his per-36s in 10-11 included 2.3 threes, 6.5 boards, 1.1 steals, and 1.4 blocks, so keep him in mind as a late flyer while we wait to see how big his scope of opportunity remains. [Re-signed Kris Humphries - Hump re-signs for one year after a tepid response from other teams in the free agent market. He finished second in the league in rebounding rate in 10-11, the major reasons for Lopez's decline in the statistic, and both players are set up to approximate those same numbers. And of course, both will benefit significantly on offense from a full season with Deron Williams. Target Hump for FG%, boards, and occasional block-plus-steals just inside the top 100. Buser]
[Lost Brook Lopez to injury, traded for Mehmet Okur - The Nets traded for Okur to fill in for Brook Lopez, who is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his right foot. Timelines for this injury can vary from six weeks to three months, depending on the severity and rate of healing, so we have to hope for a better idea of his specific timeline following Dec 23 surgery. He's likely lost for a good portion of the season in any case, but hold until we have some more clarity here. Okur steps right in to plenty of playing time, which is good for fantasy purposes, but we'll have to see how he much he can handle after totaling just 168 minutes in 10-11 (Achilles). Okur also has a long history of back problems, so for now just take your free center from the wire and don't complain if he can't stay healthy. Lopez's injury also locks in Kris Humphries as the rock of the Nets frontcourt, so target him wherever you can. He's going to stay massive on the glass and should inherit many inside baskets that would have otherwise gone to Lopez - the majority of Okur's field goal attempts come from the perimeter. All of the Nets' other starters will also see a few more touches as a result of the loss of Lopez. Deep-leaguers should take a look at Shawne Williams, who should now play regularly at both forward spots and can be a sneaky-good source of combined threes, steals, and blocks. Buser]

We have yet to see how the rotation will work out, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that Okafor moves to PF and Landry comes off the bench. Don't go overboard with expectations for Landry in any case - his career per-30 minute averages include 14.5 points, 6.2 boards, 0.9 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.6 blocks. Buser]

[Waived Chauncey Billups and signed Tyson Chandler - The Knicks decided that Douglas and Chandler as starters gave them a better chance to win games than Billups and Ronny Turiaf (traded to Washington) and made the moves to get it done. Chandler was brought to the team to play defense and free Amar'e from having to do so. A double-double is almost certainly in order, but don't count on a repeat of his 65% FG now that he's no longer teammates with an elite passer. The real winner here is Douglas, who will look to build on his late-season success from 10-11 (final 24 games: 29 minutes, 14.3 points, 2.7 threes, 4.8 assists, 1.1 turnovers). Douglas will run with the first unit even if Mike Bibby is signed and will be among the league's leaders in 3PM - he immediately can be argued ahead of players like Jason Terry and Jameer Nelson. But make no mistake, the offense as a whole will run through Melo and Amar'e and both are locked in for massive seasons. Billups was utterly stunned by the entire turn of events and could retire if he doesn't end up in a very favorable situation, so stay tuned. Also stay tuned for the Knicks to add depth at FC - whoever is brought on board will immediately have a spot in the regular rotation. Buser]
[Signed Mike Bibby - Toney Douglas is significantly better than Bibby at this point of his career, so I don't see this signing as anything more than cheap, veteran depth. Bibby can hit an open three with some regularity, but he's ineffectual on offense otherwise and one of the league's biggest defensive liabilities at any position. Buser]
[Signed Baron Davis - The Knicks have big plans on paper for a healthy Davis, but there is real mystery surrounding his back and when he'll be able to return to game action. There has been speculation that his injury was exaggerated so that the Cavs would cut him and no teams under the cap would claim him. That's a completely reasonable scenario, but all signs point to his missing at least a month due to a bulging disk. Once he is declared fit, he'll need practices to get his conditioning back and acclimate to his teammates. And what if Toney Douglas starts the season in fantastic fashion and the Knicks are off to a strong start around him? That's not an outlandish scenario in the least. I've downgraded Douglas a bit but not much, given that he'll start for at least a portion of the season, and in any scenario Davis isn't going to be ready for starter's minutes any time soon. [Re-signed Grant Hill - Hill turned down (better) offers elsewhere to return to the Suns and cloud the picture at shooting guard, as he'll most certainly retain his starting SF gig. Dudley's ideal position is SF but the Suns may choose to start him over Brown as the incumbant. Hill will top out at 30 minutes per game once again, but this does mean that neither Dudley nor Brown are going to be looking at true starter's minutes in any scenario that doesn't involve a major injury. Hill is a last-round glue guy for roto or efficient h2h teams, Dudley is now "just" a late-round pick for threes and steals, and Brown is a fringe option in standard leagues. [Chuck Hayes update - So... the Kings have signed Hayes again after a second medical opinion cleared him of any serious heart issues. He's back in as the team's starting power forward, which means his underrated production puts him back in the top 100, and it's great news for the development of DeMarcus Cousins, who gets to see how a true professional conducts himself on both ends of the court. In 63 starts last season (30 minutes), Hayes averaged 8.6 points on 54% FG, 8.7 boards, 3.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.7 blocks. Drop Hickson back down a few pegs on your draft sheet, as he's back to the bench, and move Jason Thompson to the waiver wire. Buser]
