Spring roundup: Harper goes deep as Nationals beat Tigers

Bryce Harper hit his first home run of the spring and drove in three runs as a Washington Nationals split squad posted a 6-2 triumph over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Harper smacked a two-run homer over the right-field wall off Detroit right-hander Alex Wilson in the third inning to give Washington a 3-2 lead. He added a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Jim Adduci had a run-scoring single and Jeimer Candelario hit an RBI triple for the Tigers.

Orioles 10, Red Sox 8

Adam Jones went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Manny Machado, Pedro Alvarez and Tim Beckham also each drove in two runs as Baltimore rallied to beat Boston at Sarasota, Fla. Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers hit back-to-back homers in the second inning as the Red Sox built a 6-0 lead.

Astros 4, Cardinals 1

Jose Altuve homered and right-hander Brad Peacock pitched two perfect innings as Houston beat St. Louis at Jupiter, Fla. Harrison Bader had an RBI single for the Cardinals.

Indians 6, Brewers 2

Jason Kipnis socked his fifth homer of the spring and Eric Stamets also went deep as Cleveland defeated Milwaukee at Phoenix. Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain each had two hits for the Brewers.

Padres (ss) 7, White Sox 6

Phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and Manuel Margot homered as San Diego knocked off Chicago at Glendale, Ariz. Welington Castillo and Adam Engel homered for Chicago.

Pirates 9, Twins 3

Elias Diaz slugged a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning as Pittsburgh sailed past Minnesota at Fort Myers, Fla. Joe Mauer drove in two runs and Brian Dozier had two hits for the Twins.

Nationals (ss) 7, Mets 3

Chris Dominguez homered and had two RBIs and Pedro Severino had a two-run single as Washington defeated New York at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier hit homers for the Mets.

Diamondbacks 2, Cubs 0

Nick Ahmed and Rey Fuentes homered and right-hander Taijuan Walker struck out four in three scoreless innings as Arizona blanked Chicago at Scottsdale, Ariz. Cubs left-hander Jon Lester gave up one run and three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Athletics 12, Padres (ss) 4

Josh Phegley, Franklin Barreto, Mark Canha, Kevin Merrell and Anthony Garcia all homered as Oakland cruised past San Diego at Peoria, Ariz. Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer for the Padres, his first blast of the spring.

Angels 7, Rockies 6

Justin Upton homered and had three RBIs to help Los Angeles edge Colorado at Tempe, Ariz. Brendan Rogers and Garrett Hampson homered for the Rockies.

Phillies 4, Blue Jays 2

Danny Ortiz recorded the tiebreaking single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Philadelphia defeated Toronto at Clearwater, Fla. Blue Jays right-hander Marco Estrada struck out three and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings.

Dodgers 9, Giants 3

Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer and Donovan Solano lined a two-run double as Los Angeles knocked off San Francisco at Scottsdale, Ariz. Steven Duggar homered for the Giants.

Rays 9, Yankees 1

Peter Maris hit a three-run homer and Mallex Smith went 3-for-3 with an RBI as Tampa Bay rolled past New York at Tampa, Fla. Ronald Torreyes had two of the Yankees' six hits.

Braves 5, Marlins 2

Alay Lago delivered a two-run single to help Atlanta knock off Miami at Kissimmee, Fla. Bryan Holaday homered for the Marlins.

Royals 10, Reds 3

Jorge Bonifacio had two hits and two RBIs to help Kansas City rout Cincinnati at Goodyear, Ariz. Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer for the Reds.

Mariners 10, Rangers 7

Mike Ford slugged a go-ahead three-run homer and Ian Miller also had three RBIs as Seattle recovered from a seven-run deficit to knock off Texas at Surprise, Ariz. Robinson Chirinos and Ryan Rua homered for the Rangers.
