Player Notes
Rob Bradford of WEEI reports that Jon Lester isn't expected to make a decision anytime soon on where he'll sign.

Advice: Lester is still said to be early in the free agent process and is still meeting with interested teams. The Red Sox remain optimistic at a reunion with the prized left-hander, though the Cubs, Braves, Giants and Cardinals are among many others interested in his services.

Red Sox owner John Henry said he's optimistic about the team signing free agent Jon Lester.

Advice: "I am. I'm hopeful," Henry said. He has also said the team won't be concerned about exceeding the $189 million luxury tax to improve the ballclub. The Red Sox just announced the Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez signings Tuesday, but it appears that won't preclude them from pursuing Lester. The Cubs, Braves, Giants and Cardinals are also rumored to be involved.

David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports that the Cubs have offered free agent left-hander Jon Lester a six-year deal worth "north of" $135 million.

Advice: This is the biggest reported offer to Lester thus far, topping the six-year, $110-120 million offer he reportedly received from the Red Sox. This is shaping up to be more than a two-team race, as the Braves, Giants, and Cardinals are also involved. In fact, Kaplan pegs the Giants as a serious threat. Perhaps something close to a $25 million AAV isn't so far-fetched after all.

Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports that Jon Lester's AAV (average annual value) is expected to exceed $25 million per season when he signs with a team.

Advice: That's a lot of dough. Only three pitchers (Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander, and Clayton Kershaw) have ever signed a contract with an AAV of $25 million or more. Lester has reportedly received a six-year offer from the Red Sox worth between $110-120 million, but it sounds like he'll end up getting more before all is said and done.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that there are at least five teams "seriously interested" in free agent left-hander Jon Lester.

Advice: While the money will obviously be an important factor in his decision, Lester also values comfort. This could give an edge to the Red Sox or the Braves in his adopted hometown of Atlanta. The Cubs, Giants, and Cardinals are also believed to be in the mix. The Red Sox have reportedly offered Lester a six-year deal worth between $110 and $120 million and Heyman hears that they could be willing to go to $130 million to get a deal done.

Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com reports that Jon Lester plans to visit with the Cardinals next week.

Advice: Gammons adds that Lester "perhaps" could then make a decision at the end of that week ahead of the Winter Meetings. Most have viewed the Cubs and Red Sox as the favorites to sign the left-hander, but the Cards, Braves, Giants, Blue Jays and Royals have also expressed interest. Part of the appeal with Lester is that it won't cost a team a draft pick to sign him.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are "still very much engaged" with Jon Lester.

Advice: The Sox have signed both Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval in the last 12-24 hours, but they're apparently not done spending in this market. Lester is also drawing serious interest from the Cubs and Braves, and the Giants, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Royals have also been linked. The 30-year-old left-hander registered a 2.46 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 220/48 K/BB ratio in 219 2/3 innings this past season between Boston and Oakland.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Giants' savings on Pablo Sandoval "could put them in play" for free agent starter Jon Lester.

Advice: Sandoval is reportedly headed to Boston (along with Hanley Ramirez) on a five-year deal worth around $100 million. That has left the defending World Series-champion Giants scrambling to reload -- Cuban defector Yasmany Tomas is known to be a target, and Rosenthal suggests that third baseman Chase Headley might become an option to take over for Sandoval at third base. Lester would obviously be a fantastic addition to the San Francisco pitching staff. The Cubs, Braves, Red Sox, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Royals are also believed to have serious interest.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that "at least six teams" have interest in free agent LHP Jon Lester.

Advice: The three teams known to have met with the free agent are the Red Sox, Cubs and Braves. Rosenthal also wrote that the Cardinals, Blue Jays and Royals "have interest" in Lester. He speculated that the Yankees could possibly jump into the mix, but at this point, that's just speculation. The Red Sox reportedly offered Lester a six-year deal worth between $110 and $120 million.

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that Jon Lester is scheduled to meet with at least two teams next week.

Advice: Lester met with Red Sox, Cubs and Braves this week. The Cardinals have been mentioned as one potential landing spot for Lester, so they could be one of the clubs the left-hander visits next week. The Red Sox reportedly have offered Lester a six-year deal in the $110-120 million range.
