Player Notes
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that there's "nothing happening" on the Justin Upton trade front and "it appears he's staying put at deadline."

Advice: Things can always change, of course, but there has been surprisingly little trade rumors of late involving the outfielder. The Padres appear content to pick up a draft pick for Upton this winter rather than deal him for a trade package they deem unsatisfactory.

Justin Upton cracked a go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning of Thursday afternoon's 8-7 win over the Mets.

Advice: This will go down as one of the stranger games of the season. The Mets held a 7-1 lead after six innings. This advantage was dropped to two runs after Derek Norris hit a grand slam in the seventh inning. And then the ninth inning happened. Mets closer Jeurys Familia recorded the first two outs of the inning easily enough, at which point, a string of storms hit and delayed the game for 44 minutes. You can probably guess what happened next. Familia returned to the game after the long delay, allowed two singles, then served up a three-run homer to Upton to give the Padres an 8-7 lead. This would hold as the final score, though not before another delay of over an hour. The baseball deities must have really wanted to enjoy this epic collapse. Upton's name has been swirling in trade rumors for weeks, but he's still with the Padres and it's not a given that he'll be moved. He's struggled over the last two months, but has now homered twice and driven in six in his last two games.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the White Sox are interested in Padres outfielder Justin Upton and Tigers outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Advice: Such a scenario would have been unthinkable just a couple of weeks ago, but the White Sox have played much better of late and currently sit just 2 1/2 games back for a Wild Card spot. Both Upton and Cespedes would merely be rentals, but either could make a huge difference in the lineup for the suddenly-surging South Siders.

Justin Upton went 2-for-4 and hit his 17th homer Wednesday versus the Mets.

Advice: He also had a sac fly and finished the night with three RBI. He's still batting just .186 in 156 at-bats since the beginning of June, but better days are surely ahead.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Orioles and Padres have discussed a trade that would send Justin Upton to Baltimore.

Advice: The O's have been one of the clubs connected to Upton previously. However, Stark also notes that the deal could be expanded to include Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross. It's unclear at this point how close something might be to getting done. The Orioles have been mentioned as a possible seller, but they sit just 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot and this rumor would seem to indicate that they have no plans to give up on a playoff run.

Justin Upton clobbered his 16th home run of the season on Sunday, powering the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Marlins.

Advice: Upton got the scoring started with his solo blast off Marlins starter Mat Latos in the second inning. He also singled and walked in the contest, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3, raising his season slash to .251/.330/.429 to go along with 16 homers and 50 RBI.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Mets and Padres have reached an impasse in trade talks for Justin Upton.

Advice: The Padres are reportedly demanding at least one high-end prospect, possibly two, but the Mets have balked at the high asking price. While the two sides could certainly resume talks, it seems more likely that the Mets will target a lower-level outfielder such as Gerardo Parra from the Brewers, rather than mortgage any part of their future.

Justin Upton (oblique) has returned to the Padres starting lineup on Friday.

Advice: Upton missed the previous four games due to an oblique issue. The 27-year-old, who is a hot commodity on the trade market, is slashing .251/.330/.425 with 15 homers, 49 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 90 games on the year.

Justin Upton (oblique) is expected back in the Padres' lineup on Friday.

Advice: Upton missed a fourth straight start on Thursday, but he took batting practice before the game and then pinch-hit in it. The outfielder has been battling tightness in his left oblique.

Justin Upton (oblique) said that he felt better on Thursday, but remained out of the lineup for a fourth straight game.

Advice: Upton was scheduled to take batting practice on Thursday, and there have been no indications that anything went wrong with that session. He should still be considered day-to-day with a return over the weekend looking more and more likely.
