Player Notes
Justin Upton's agent, Larry Reynolds, said in an interview on SiriusXM Sunday that his client is open to a contract extension with the Padres.

Advice: Upton is not, however, willing to negotiate a deal in-season, which is pretty common among impending free agents. Whether the Padres have any real interest or would be capable of locking Upton up remains to be seen. If they don't extend the outfielder, they can make him a qualifying offer next winter and pick up a draft pick.

Padres acquired OF Justin Upton and RHP Aaron Northcraft from the Braves in exchange for LHP Max Fried, INF Jace Peterson, 3B Dustin Peterson, OF Mallex Smith and the fourth international bonus pool slot.

Advice: The deal, which was reported early Friday morning, has now been made official. Upton is coming off a season in which he batted .270/.342/.491 with 29 homers and 102 RBI for the Braves. With the addition of him, Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Derek Norris and Will Middlebrooks, the Padres have completely re-tooled their lineup.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres will acquire Justin Upton from the Braves.

Advice: A.J. Preller has struck again. The Padres general manager planned to add offense over the winter and has now traded for Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Justin Upton and Derek Norris within the span of a few weeks. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says the Padres will also receive a low-level prospect, with the Braves getting Max Fried, Jace Peterson, Dustin Peterson and Mallex Smith. Fried underwent Tommy John surgery in August but was one of the game's top pitching prospects before blowing out his elbow.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the Braves are "finishing up" a trade involving Justin Upton.

Advice: Fangraphs's Kiley McDaniel says Upton will be going to an AL West club "for a package headlined by young pitching." FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal has ruled out the Rangers and A's as possibile landing spots, while both Rosenthal and MLB.com's Mark Bowman say the Padres cannot be ruled out. The Mariners have also been connected to Upton. It sounds like the deal is likely to be completed at some point on Friday. Upton will be a free agent after the 2015 season.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that the Braves are looking to package Chris Johnson with Justin Upton or Evan Gattis in possible trade scenarios.

Advice: A week ago, the Padres were a team that Bowman cited as being interested in Justin Upton. With their near-trades for Matt Kemp and Wil Myers, it appears unlikely that they would still be in the market for the outfielder. Bowman wrote that the Braves were holding court with five other teams. It would be palatable for the team if they could package Johnson or Gattis in with Upton, though it would obviously be tougher for them to complete a trade if they were attaching extra weight to the deal. The Braves are also reportedly looking to deal B.J. Upton.
