Final Four first: UConn, NC State both send men, women to semifinals in 2024

There's a first time for everything, including two schools having both its men's and women's basketball teams make the March Madness Final Four in the same season.

Connecticut and North Carolina State have teams in the Men's Final Four and the Women's Final Four this week, the first time that has ever happened.

Counting UConn and NC State this season, 15 schools have had teams in the national semifinals of the Men's NCAA Tournament and the Women's NCAA Tournament in the same year, but this is the first year that two schools have accomplished the rare feat.

And it's a surprise for one of those schools to be in this situation.

Familiar territory for UConn in 2024 Final Fours

This isn't exactly uncharted territory for UConn, which had both teams in the Final Four in 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014 and now 2024.

The UConn women advanced to this year's Final Four as a No. 3 seed, while the UConn men were the No. 1 overall seed in their tournament.

UConn is the only school to win both the women's and men's national championships in basketball in the same year, as the Huskies won the Women's Final Four and Men's Final Four in 2004 and 2014.

Uncharted territory for NC State in 2024 Final Fours

This is uncharted territory for NC State, which has both teams in the Final Four in the same year for the first time.

The women's team got to the Final Four as a No. 3 seed, while the men's team has made an extremely improbable run as a No. 11 seed started by winning five straight games in the ACC Tournament just to make the men's tournament field.

South Carolina is the most recent school to have both teams in Final Fours

The most recent school to have both teams in the Final Four before 2024 was South Carolina, who accomplished the feat in 2017.

The women's team won the title that year, while the men's team lost in the Final Four to Gonzaga, which was coincidently played at the site of this year's men's Final Four, State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

Syracuse accomplished the feat in 2016, and Louisville had both teams in the Final Four in 2013. UConn was there with both teams in 2014, 2011 and 2009.

Incredibly, five schools accomplished the rare feat from 2002-2006, with LSU sending both teams to the national semifinals in 2006, Michigan State in 2005, preceded by UConn (2004), Texas (2003) and Oklahoma (2002).

The other two teams to have the women's and men's teams make the Final Four in the same year? Duke in 1999 and Georgia in 1983.

Final Four odds for UConn, NC State to win both national championships in 2024

Could we see both UConn teams win the title in the same year for the third time ever this year?

Or could NC State break through to become just the second team to have its men's and women's programs win the national championship in the same season?

The odds aren't exactly in favor of that happening.

FanDuel Sportsbook puts UConn at +1130 odds to win both national titles. The Huskies are favored to win the men's title, but the women are behind South Carolina and Iowa in odds to win the women's national championship.

It has NC State at +27200, both teams are the long shots to win their respective Final Fours.

It's March Madness, however, and you never know what could happen. Even in April.

There's a first time for everything, right?
