Angels sign Weaver to five-year extension
Jered Weaver(notes) and the Los Angeles Angels agreed Sunday to a five-year, $85-million contract extension, according to baseball sources.
The contract includes a full no-trade clause, speaking to Weaver's affinity for the organization and Southern California.
Its framework approximates those of extensions for Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander(notes) (five years, $80 million) and Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez(notes) (five years, $78 million), both signed prior to the 2010 season.
Weaver would not have been a free agent until after the 2012 season. His agent, Scott Boras, typically recommends to his high-end clients that they play into free agency. But, Weaver opted for another five years of security, along with the knowledge he’ll continue his career near his hometown of Simi Valley, Ca.
Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez(notes), another young Boras client, signed a seven-year, $80-million extension in January, forgoing several years of free agency.
Weaver, 28, is 14-6 with an American League-leading 2.10 ERA in 2011 and 78-45 in five-plus seasons with the Angels.
