Spring roundup: Red Sox LHP Sale smacked by line drive

Boston left-hander Chris Sale departed in the first inning after being hit by a line drive in the hip, and the Red Sox went on to post a 6-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday at Fort Myers, Fla.

Sale was facing his fourth batter of the game when Houston's J.D. Davis sent a liner right at him. The ball smashed into Sale's left hip and the Boston ace went down to the ground in obvious pain, but he was relieved to hear later that he only suffered a bruise.

"I don't see anything lingering from this," Sale told reporters, insisting he would make Thursday's Opening Day start against the Tampa Bay Rays. "It looked a lot worse than it actually is."

Xander Bogaerts homered and had two RBIs and Mitch Moreland contributed a two-run triple for Boston. The Astros were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

Felix Hernandez shined in his first start since suffering a forearm injury earlier this spring as Seattle trumped Chicago at Peoria, Ariz. Hernandez, pitching in a game for the first time since Feb. 26, allowed one run on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. The Cubs' Ian Happ took him deep in the first inning for his seventh home run this spring.

Anthony Rizzo blasted a two-run homer and Jason Vosler added a solo shot as Chicago shut out Colorado at Mesa, Ariz. Jon Gray threw three scoreless innings for the Rockies.

Yankees (ss) 13, Blue Jays 6

Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius and Zack Zehner each hit two-run homers to help New York cruise past Toronto at Tampa, Fla. Yangervis Solarte went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Blue Jays.

Pirates 7, Rays 5

Francisco Cervelli and Will Craig homered to help Pittsburgh defeat Tampa Bay at Bradenton, Fla. Matt Duffy and Adeiny Hechavarria drove in two runs apiece for the Rays.

Phillies 4, Tigers 1

Right-hander Drew Hutchison allowed one hit over four shutout innings to help Philadelphia knock off Detroit at Lakeland, Fla. The Tigers scored their run on a ninth-inning wild pitch by right-hander Jake Thompson.

Cardinals 8, Mets 7

Lane Thomas delivered a ground single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift St. Louis past New York at Jupiter, Fla. Adrian Gonzalez and Todd Frazier stroked back-to-back run-scoring doubles in a five-run fifth as the Mets took a 6-0 lead.

Marlins 4, Nationals 3

Yadiel Rivera went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs as Miami edged Washington at West Palm Beach, Fla. Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer gave up four runs and eight hits and struck out nine in seven innings in his final spring tune-up.

Yankees (ss) 8, Braves 3

Aaron Hicks and Ryan McBroom each hit solo homers in the fourth inning to help New York defeat Atlanta at Kissimmee, Fla. Ozzie Albies hit a two-run shot for Atlanta.

Twins 12, Orioles 4

Four different Minnesota players clubbed home runs in a rout of Baltimore at Sarasota, Fla. Chris Tillman served up six runs on seven hits in his 5 1/3 innings for the Orioles.

Brewers 10, Athletics 5

Christian Yelich homered and added a three-run double as Milwaukee routed Oakland at Mesa, Ariz. Christian Bethancourt and Troy Stokes also went deep for the Brewers.

White Sox 7, Dodgers 3

Keon Barnum ignited a four-run rally in the fifth inning with a two-run home run as Chicago came back to beat Los Angeles at Phoenix. Austin Barnes accounted for all the Dodgers' scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning.

Indians 10, Rangers 3

Corey Kluber struck out six and allowed two runs in six innings in his final spring start as Cleveland cruised past Texas at Surprise, Ariz. Cole Hamels threw three scoreless innings and Elvis Andrus homered for the Rangers.

Padres 6, Reds 2

Wil Myers hit his fourth home run of the spring and drove in two runs as San Diego topped Cincinnati at Goodyear, Ariz. Scooter Gennett homered and had two RBIs for the Reds.

Diamondbacks (ss) 15, Angels 9

Nick Ahmed clubbed a three-run double and Chris Herrmann had a three-run homer as Arizona defeated Los Angeles in a slugfest at Tempe, Ariz. Nine different players had RBIs for the Angels, but starter Tyler Skaggs allowed four runs and walked five in four innings.

Royals 4, Diamondbacks (ss) 4

Frank Schwindel hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth as Kansas City came back to tie Arizona at Scottsdale, Ariz. The home runs was Schwindel's seventh this spring, and Mike Moustakas added his fourth for the Royals.
