CENTREVILLE — After three consecutive years of making the finals, the Three Rivers volleyball team finally broke through.

It came at the St. Joseph County volleyball tournament, this time held in a steamy gymnasium at Centreville High School.

The Wildcats defeated Sturgis in three sets during the finals. The Trojans looked impressive during the opening set and beat Three Rivers, 25-18. Three Rivers was probably even more impressive during the second set, coming away with a 25-9 victory. In the third and final stanza, the Lady Cats picked up a convincing 15-6 win.

“I could not be more proud of this team, we really played well today,” Three Rivers coach Megan Jergens said following the team’s victory. “I was a little scared after the first set with Sturgis, but we re-grouped and got to see ourselves playing well.”

Three Rivers just opened its season this past weekend at the Gull Lake Invitational, there they finished second overall to Hamilton. Jergens said her team played well there, but coming up short happens sometimes. That is what helped make Monday’s victory at the county tournament even better.

“Sometimes our girls forget how good they actually are,” she said. “When other teams are getting cohesive and playing well against us, sometimes we forget what’s actually going on and we have to do something good to remember we are a good team, we’ve got this and we can recover.”

In the semifinals, Three Rivers knocked off Colon in a couple of sets at 25-16, 25-17. Pool play saw the Lady Wildcats finish with a 3-0 mark, beating Mendon 25-17, 25-23; White Pigeon 25-13, 25-15 and Colon 25-13, 25-17.
