Playoff schedule, scores: Terry Sanford golf wins 2nd straight state title

Spring sports have reached the postseason, with NCISAA and NCHSAA playoffs for baseball, softball, girls soccer, track and field, boys golf, boys tennis and lacrosse underway.

Terry Sanford has already claimed a pair of state championships. Drew Hedgecoe won a third straight 3A singles tennis state title and the Bulldogs golf team won its second straight 3A state title. Freedom Christian softball is still undefeated will play for an NCISAA championship this weekend. And several more local teams are still alive in other sports.

Here, you can find brackets, scores and updates from every Fayetteville-area high school sports team participating in this season's playoffs. Check back after games, as we'll update this page all postseason.

NCHSAA state spring playoff schedule for Fayetteville teams

Baseball

The NCHSAA baseball postseason starts May 7 with the higher seed hosting. State championships will be held May 31-June 1.

First round - Tuesday, May 7

3A East

  • No. 3 Cape Fear 12, No. 30 Western Alamance 4: The Colts pounded out 13 hits, including a pair of home runs from senior Mason Hughes, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

  • No. 4 Terry Sanford 4, No. 29 Havelock 2: Bulldogs junior Gibson Bray had a pair of RBIs, and junior Josh Hart gave up only two hits for the win on the mound.

4A East

  • No. 1 Ashley 10, No. 32 Pine Forest 0: The Trojans' season ends at 12-15 with a second straight state playoff appearance. Sophomore Ja'Lynn Thomas led the team and ranked in the AAC top 10 with a .413 batting average and .571 slugging percentage.

Second round - Friday, May 10

3A East

  • No. 4 Terry Sanford 19, No. 13 Burlington Williams 3: The Bulldogs took advantage of Williams with two innings scoring eight or more runs. Led by a Brent Smith three-run homer, and a Wills Noon grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, Terry Sanford will advance to the third round.

Saturday, May 11

  • No. 14 Winterville South Central 3, No. 3 Cape Fear 2: The Colts' season ends after a fifth straight state playoff appearance, second straight U8 Conference regular-season and tournament championship sweep, and a 24-5 record — their second 20-win season in 10 years. Senior shortstop/pitcher Mason Hughes, a Charleston Southern commit, ends the season ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 1 in North Carolina with 57 runs scored. Senior left-handed pitcher Ethan Plesser ranked in the top 16 in the state in wins (9) and strikeouts (99).

Third round - Wednesday, May 15

  • No. 12 Orange (19-5) at No. 4 Terry Sanford (24-5), 7 p.m.

Softball

The NCHSAA softball postseason starts May 7 with the higher seed hosting. State championships will be held May 31-June 1.

First round - Tuesday, May 7

3A East

  • No. 9 Cape Fear 3, No. 24 West Johnson 0: Senior Olivia Melvin went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and a pair of RBIs to lead the Colts into Round 2 against All American Conference champ Triton.

4A East

  • No. 27 Gray's Creek 20, No. 6 Cardinal Gibbons 8: The Bears had 18 hits in a big offensive night with freshman August Kebort and senior Roshell Williams notching three hits apiece, including a home run from Kebort. Junior UNC Pembroke commit Amariya Green went 4-for-4 with two triples, seven RBIs and five runs scored.

  • No. 15 South View 3, No. 18 Panther Creek 1: In the completion of a game suspended by weather, the Tigers' Jordynn Parnell struck out 14 batters for the win on Thursday.

Second round - Thursday, May 9

3A East

  • No. 9 Cape Fear 6, No. 8 Triton 2: Senior Olivia Melvin led the charge for the Colts, going 2-for-4 with a home run and pitching 12 strikeouts in the road upset. Allie Dawson and Kayleigh Brewington added two RBIs apiece for Cape Fear.

Second round - Friday, May 10

4A East

  • No. 11 Wake Forest 12, No. 27 Gray's Creek 2: A postseason fixture, the Bears finish this season 11-9 behind junior Amariya Green's .617 batting average. A no-hitter from junior righty Hannah Welsh also highlighted this season.

  • No. 2 Wakefield 10, No. 15 South View 3: Tigers finish the season with a fifth straight state playoff appearance and a 19-5 record. Sophomore right-hander Jordynn Parnell ranked in the top 25 in the state with 181 strikeouts, junior Kaylie Cook led the team with a .554 batting average and senior Savanna Delp had a team-high five home runs.

Third round - Wednesday, May 15

  • No. 16 Havelock (15-7) at No. 9 Cape Fear (18-5), 6:30 p.m.

Boys lacrosse

First Round - May 1

1A/2A/3A East

  • No. 15 Terry Sanford 10, No. 18 Jacksonville 3: Tate Mannell scored five goals, Logan Constandse added three goals and four assists and Jackson Gutierrez also scored a goal for the Bulldogs.

Second round - May 4

  • No. 2 Croatan 15, No 15 Terry Sanford 6: Seniors Logan Constandse (4) and Tate Mannell (2) accounted for all of the Bulldogs' goals in a road loss. The Bulldogs end the season 8-10.

Girls lacrosse

1A/2A/3A East

First round - May 4

  • No. 7 Terry Sanford 16, No. 10 Jacksonville 4

  • No. 7 Cape Fear 6, No. 26 Jacksonville 3: Thommaso Gioannetti, Jordan Williams and Logan Tew won their singles matches, and the Colts swept through doubles to set up a second-round home game against Union Pines.

  • No. 2 Terry Sanford 6, No. 31 Richlands 0: The undefeated Bulldogs didn't drop a match, with Drew Hedgecoe, Jayden Pham and Milind Tandon posting double bagels, Edison Dill dropping just one set and Spencer Brock also winning in straight sets for the sweep.

Second Round - May 7

3A East

  • No. 2 Terry Sanford 6, No. 18 West Carteret 3: Drew Hedgecoe and Jayden Pham swept through their singles matches, and Hedgecoe and Spencer Brock swept through the doubles match to set up a third-round contest against Union Pines.

  • No. 10 Union Pines 8, No. 7 Cape Fear 1

Third Round - May 8

  • No. 2 Terry Sanford 5, No. 10 Union Pines 1: Drew Hedgcoe, Jayden Pham, and Milind Tandon all swept through their two sets to advance the Bulldogs to a fourth-round home game on Monday.

Fourth Round - May 13

  • No. 3 Wilson Fike 5, No. 2 Terry Sanford, 2: The Bulldogs' perfect season ends at 12-1.

Boys tennis - individual

3A Mideast Regional

Burlington Tennis Center - May 3-4

  • Terry Sanford's Drew Hedgecoe defended his regional title and carries the Mideast No. 1 seed into 3A state championships, scheduled for May 10-11 at Burlington Tennis Center. The junior is seeking a third straight state title.

Singles

  • Terry Sanford's Drew Hedgecoe completed his journey to his third consecutive singles state championship as a junior. Drew defeated Shiv Patel of South Central, 6-2, 6-3.

3A Mideast Regional

Highland Country Club - May 6

  • Terry Sanford won the 3A Mideast Regional with a team score of 279

3A State Championship

Longleaf Golf & Country Club - May 13-14

  • Terry Sanford won its second straight state title and fifth in program history with a team score of 567 — the second-lowest round in NCHSAA finals history. The Bulldogs beat second-place J.H. Rose by 14 strokes.

Girls soccer

First round- Monday, May 13

3A East

  • No. 8 Cape Fear 6, No. 25 Triton 3: Jayda Angel led the Colts to a first-round victory with a hat-trick and an assist. Meredith Wenthur had five saves.

4A East

  • No. 10 Pinecrest 7, No. 23 Pine Forest 1: The Trojans returned to state playoffs for the ninth time in 10 seasons behind senior Leilani Manolias' 19 goals and 43 points. Their season ends at 14-6-1.

  • No. 4 Holly Springs 9, No. 29 Jack Britt 0: The Buccaneers (12-8-2) made a third straight state playoff appearance, led by junior Kaylen Sprague's 64 points. Junior goalkeeper Sophia Ozanich finished second in the U8 with 100 saves.

  • No. 3 Chapel Hill 4, No. 30 Gray's Creek 0: The Bears finish the season 10-8-1 with an eighth straight playoff appearance. Senior Kayla Schlautman shined in the net with 33 saves and no goals allowed in 15 games. Sophomore Sofia Carrasco scored a team-high 18 goals on the season, with junior Ziara Bruson adding 16.

Second round - Friday, May 16

  • No. 9 Northern Nash (15-5-0) at No. 8 Cape Fear (19-4-1)

Track and Field

The NCHSAA boys and girls track and field finals will be held at NC A&T's Marcus T. Johnson Track on May 17 for 4A, May 18 for 3A.

  • No. 1 Wayne Country Day 7, Village Christian 3: The Knights suffered at the plate and only achieved one hit in their loss.

  • Freedom Christian 8, No. 8 Harrells Christian 0: The Patriots dominated from start to finish in a revenge game over Harrells. As a team, the Patriots batted a .367, going 30-for-40 at the plate, and stole nine bases en route to the third round.

  • No. 2 Greenfield School 5, Fayetteville Christian 1: The Warriors ended their season 7-7 despite nine strikeouts from Kris Willis.

Third Round - Saturday, May 11

  • No. 1 Wayne Country Day 11, Freedom Christian 0: The Patriots' season ends at 21-7 as Sandhills Athletic Conference champions.

Girls lacrosse

First round - Tuesday, May 7

  • Fayetteville Academy 12, No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 10: Polly Miller and Vanni Intini scored a bulk of the Eagles' goals, five from Intini and four from Miller. The pair of juniors shared four assists each.

Second round - Tuesday, May 14

  • No. 2 Asheville School 14, No. 3 Fayetteville Academy 6: Eagles junior Vanni Intini ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 1 in the state with 118 goals on the season. Her 153 points ranked No. 11 nationally and No. 2 in the state. Polly Miller, also a junior, added 105 points.

Girls soccer

Finals are scheduled for May 18 at NC Wesleyan in Rocky Mount.
