Dave Roberts proves a shrewd negotiator on '25-Year-Old Baseball Cards'

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts isn’t the guy who pulls the trigger on trades, but maybe he should be?

On this week’s new episode of our “25-Year-Old Baseball Cards” series, Roberts manages to pull off quite a trade — getting one Hall of Famer and one of the most popular athletes of all time in exchange for Terry Pendleton. He actually turned down another Hall of Famer too. We also learn about a man Roberts calls “Crazy Carl,” although we didn’t learn quite enough for my liking. Roberts is shrewd when it comes to sharing potentially embarrassing stories too.

If you’re new to this series, we open baseball cards from my garage with baseball players, coaches and famous fans. My grandma bought the cards back in the day, thinking they’d be a treasure in a few decades. Nope, they’re junk wax. But opening them up with baseball people is great fodder for stories and memories.
