They still love Chase Utley in Philly. He’s with the Los Angeles Dodgers now, but Utley is such an idol to the people of Philadelphia that he earned a love letter from Mac on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” So it’s only fitting that when Utley joined us on this week’s episode of 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards he found some old Phillies. Sadly, John Kruk wasn’t one of them.
Utley wasn’t close to the majors back in 1992 — the year of cards we’re currently opening — but some of the guys he found were teammates of his by the time he made the big leagues in 2003. Among them Dave Hollins, whose second tenure with the Phillies overlapped with the start of Utley’s career. Utley actaully wanted to trade for Hollins at the end of the segment and you’ll want to the reason why. It’s pretty funny.
If you’re new to this series — and hello, if you are, nice to have you — we open baseball cards from 25 years ago that had been sitting in my garage. My grandma and I used to collect baseball cards when I was a kid and she kept unopened boxes thinking they’d be valuable in the future. Well, they’re not. So instead we open them with baseball people and look for great stories and memories. You can check out more than 40 of our previous episodes below:
