Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with Marlins star Dee Gordon

When Dee Gordon agreed to open up some 1992 Topps with us for this week’s installment of 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards it was fairly obvious we had one mission and one mission only: To find his dad.

Tom Gordon, as you might remember, was a star relief pitcher for the Kansas City Royals in 1992. And Dee, who was 4 at the time, grew up around baseball but doesn’t exactly remember being a 4-year-old in MLB clubhouses.

See if our quest for finding a Tom Gordon card worked in this week’s episode of 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards. In the process, we find one card that Dee throws clear across the dugout, a Hall of Famer and a couple guys who played with his dad. You can also hear from Dee about his current charitable endeavor with Striking Out Poverty, in which he’s donating money for every base he steals to help feed hungry people in the Dominican Republic. Fans can join him by pledging money too.

If you’re new to our series, we took some old, unopened baseball cards from my garage and started opening them with baseball players, coaches and celebrity fans. We’re not chasing cards worth a lot of money, because this era of cards isn’t. Instead, we’re looking for stories and nostalgia. If you dig it, check out our previous episodes:
