Virginia Tech DB Adonis Alexander ruled academically ineligible
Virginia Tech defensive back Adonis Alexander announced earlier in 2018 that he would be returning to the Hokies for his senior season. That’s not going to go as planned.
Virginia Tech announced Alexander has been ruled academically ineligible and can’t play in 2018.
“After last season, my family and I received positive feedback from the NFL, but I decided to return to Virginia Tech to make a run at the National Championship with my brothers,” Alexander said in a statement. “Unfortunately, I have been ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season and have therefore decided to apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft. I take full responsibility for not taking care of my business in the classroom. I will use this tough lesson as motivation to get better and learn from my mistakes as I become a professional. I appreciate all the support VT’s coaches and athletic department have given to me during my time on campus. Thank you all again! Hokie for life!”
Alexander has made 15 starts in his three years at Virginia Tech. He had 55 tackles and four interceptions as a freshman in 2015. He had two picks and 43 tackles in 2016 and then had one interception and 27 tackles in eight games in 2017.
As a supplemental draft entrant, any team that wants to select Alexander will have to forfeit a pick in the 2019 NFL draft. If a team offers a sixth-round slot for him, it would lose the corresponding pick in next spring’s draft. If Alexander isn’t chosen in the supplemental draft he would then become a free agent.
Virginia Tech also announced that defensive back transfer Jeremy Webb would miss the 2018 season with an Achilles’ tear. Webb was a member of the Hokies’ 2018 signing class as a junior college transfer.
“While we share Jeremy’s disappointment that he will miss the 2018 season, our medical staff is confident that he will make a complete recovery,” Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said. “We look forward to Jeremy beginning the rehab process as soon as possible.”
