Softball: Bronson sweeps Quincy in key Big 8 doubleheader

QUINCY – The Bronson Viking softball team kept its unbeaten streak inside the Big 8 conference alive with a two-game sweep over rival Quincy on Wednesday, winning by scores of 17-1 and 9-3.

With the sweep Bronson maintains their lead in the Big 8 conference with only one more doubleheader to go, a home matchup with Springport scheduled for May 14.

Bronson packed their hitting sticks for the trip down U.S.-12 on Wednesday, as Bronson combined to out hit Quincy 29-9 over the two-game sweep.

“We came out and attacked the ball on offense, which was good to see,” Bronson coach Becky Gray said. “We are working hard defensively, and it is coming together. Getting two wins was big for us tonight.”

Bronson jumped on Quincy early and never really looked back as a 2-1 first inning lead for the Vikings continually increased throughout the game, with Bronson scoring four runs in the second, three in the third, and eight in the fourth for the 17-1 win.

Ashlynn Harris took the win on the mound for Bronson after throwing four innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Harris helped her own cause at the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and two stolen bases.

Roni Bir also notched a multi-hit game, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs while Brealyn Lasky finished a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Also adding doubles to the win were Ciara Blankenship, Lydia Wells, and Mya Webb with Wells and Webb chipping in RBIs.

Danika Skirka took the loss on the mound for Quincy after throwing four innings, allowing 16 hits and 17 runs, eight earned, with five walks and one strikeout.

Alyssa McCavit led the offensive effort with a triple while Kaylee Modert added a double.

Game two of the twinbill saw Bronson take the early lead and hold off a Quincy attempted comeback which saw the Orioles plate three runs in the fifth, closing the score to 5-3 after five. Bronson came back to add four huge insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to put away the 9-3 win.

Bronson out hit Quincy 13-7 in the game two win while also taking advantage of three Quincy fielding errors.

Mya Webb took the win on the mound for Bronson after throwing six innings in the start, allowing seven hits and three runs with two walks and six strikeouts.

Lydia Wells finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Harris had another big game at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple while Blankenship added a single and a double with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Lasky also had a big game at the plate with a single and a double with two RBIs.

Danika Skirka took the loss on the mound for Quincy after throwing six innings and allowing 13 hits with nine runs, eight earned, with one walk and one strikeout.

Alyssa McCavit brought the big bat for Quincy in game two with a home run and three RBIs while Payton Gross added two singles. Josie Mescher added a pair of singles in the tough loss.

With the loss Quincy falls to 11-10 overall on the season while Bronson improves to 16-8 overall on the year and a perfect 10-0 in the Big 8 conference.
