Borussia Dortmund emerge with the advantage but PSG tie still in flux after night of missed chances

22:22 , Mike Jones

Might the story of the season suddenly be happening out of nowhere, like another sublime Jadon Sancho run? Nobody has given Borussia Dortmund a chance in these Champions League semi-finals but, in part because Paris Saint-Germain couldn’t take any massive chances of their own, the German club at least have one foot in Wembley.

That came from the one goal in this tie, that was itself struck by another unfashionable figure in Niclas Fullkrug, but it could have been so many more.

It was a 1-0 win for Borussia Dortmund that could have been a 7-6 either way. If PSG are to face disappointment in this competition once again, the Qatari project will look to this tie and wonder how they missed so many opportunities. Then again, they should also wonder how they gave up so many.

More from Hummels speaking about Niclas Fullkrug’s winner: “If you opponent tries to press you and play with a high line you have to try to come in behind.

“It was a great ball from Nico Schlotterbeck and a great run from Niclas Fullkrug. We had a few other chances like this, Karim Adeyemi tried to go there, but didn’t get the outcome. It is always a danger and creates chances for us.

“It is 90-minutes to the final and we know we want to get there. We put our heart onto the pitch to achieve this and we are one little step closer but, we are not over the finish line yet.”

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, speaking to TNT Sports: “It was intense but it was a lot of fun to play in this stadium with the fans behind us. The team gave it all, 100%, and we worked well together.

“We didn’t play perfect so it is good to see we don’t play perfect and still can get such a good result against a very good team. All round we can be very happy.

“We know how hard it is for opponents to beat us here. If you come to Dortmund you know how hard it is. the problem is we still have to go to Paris, we know how hard it is to to go there.

“I don’t think I’ve ever won there. But we can look forward to a great game on Tuesday.”

Matchday 1 was Paris’s third successive European game against German opponents, having lost home and away against Bayern in last season’s round of 16.

A 3-2 first-leg win at Bayern in the quarter-finals three seasons ago is Paris’s only victory in their last seven games in Germany (D2 L4).

A 3-1 defeat at Bayern on Matchday 6 of the 2017/18 Champions League ended Paris’s seven-match unbeaten run against German clubs, home and away (W5 D2). Their overall record since then is W6 D2 L6.

That 2020 tie against PSG was Dortmund’s last contest against a French club before Matchday 1 this year.

Dortmund were unbeaten in their first six home games against French clubs (W3 D3) but have lost two of the subsequent six matches, winning three.

Defeat in Paris four seasons ago ended Dortmund’s three-game winning run against French opponents. They have now lost two of the last three, drawing the other.

Borussia Dortmund are the anti-establishment – can they be saviours of the Champions League?

19:40 , Mike Jones

As Borussia Dortmund prepare for their biggest European game in 11 years, they’re also thinking about next year. There is increasing talk around the club about bringing former manager Jurgen Klopp back as head of football in 2025.

For some at Dortmund, this is the inevitable end point of a long period harking back to the 2010-13 glory era, with the club constantly rehiring familiar figures. This isn’t necessarily seen as a good thing, either. There is a strong argument it has prevented the club from progressing. They don’t even have a truly great young talent they can sell on right now, a policy that has sustained the club in past seasons.

The teams’ only other meetings came in the 2010/11 Europa League group stage, when both games ended all square.

An 87th-minute goal from Paris substitute Clément Chantôme cancelled out Nuri Şahin’s penalty opener for Dortmund five minutes into the second half on Matchday 3.

The game at the Parc des Princes two weeks later finished goalless.

The teams crossed paths in the 2019/20 Champions League round of 16, Paris overturning a first-leg defeat to win 3-2 on aggregate on their way to the final, which they would lose to Bayern.

Dortmund were 2-1 winners in the opening game in Germany, Erling Haaland scoring twice on his first European appearance for the club either side of Neymar’s 75th-minute leveller.

The Brazilian struck again at the Parc des Princes to level the tie, Neymar scoring in the 28th minute before Juan Bernat got what proved to be the decisive goal of the contest a minute into first-half added time.

Paris were victorious at the Parc des Princes on 19 September thanks to goals early in the second half from Kylian Mbappé and former Dortmund full-back Achraf Hakimi.

PSG, meanwhile, are in the last four for the third time in five seasons and the fourth overall – but have won only one of their previous contests at this stage, and none over two legs.

Enrique’s side have travelled to Germany for Wednesday’s first leg having been crowned as French champions at the weekend, and with a place in the Coupe de France final against Lyon booked.

The Champions League remains the missing piece for the capital club, and this could be their best chance of securing it before Kylian Mbappe moves on in the summer.

Paris Saint-Germain were "built to win the Champions League" says Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic. His team meet the French champions in the first leg of the semi-finals on Wednesday.

The French side, who beat Barcelona in the quarter-finals, lost to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final.

"The project in Paris began with the goal of winning the Champions League," said Terzic. "That’s been their main objective for a decade.

"Maybe we’re the team with less experience, but we may have the greatest hunger.

"When everyone digs in, not just those on the field and on the bench but everyone in the stadium, we’ve got a huge opportunity - and we need to take it."

Paris will be making their fourth appearance in the Champions League semi-finals this evening.

They’ve previously been eliminated at this stage of the competition by Milan in 1994/95, and Man City in 2020/21.

However, they did prevail against German opposition on their way to their only final, overcoming RB Leipzig 3-0 in a one-legged affair during the truncated 2019/20 campaign.

A vintage Champions League display from Real Madrid reveals how Bayern Munich can beat them.

A game that had almost everything was never going to leave Real Madrid with nothing. That’s just not how they do things in the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti’s side probably deserved to lose. They were definitely the inferior side. Their English star had a much more challenging night than Bayern Munich’s English star.

And yet it is the 14-time champions that of course leave a big European night that bit more satisfied. Real Madrid have a 2-2 draw and now have the chance to win this semi-final in their own stadium.

It didn’t quite go the way everyone expected after Vinicius Junior’s opening goal, given how impressively Bayern Munich rallied. And yet the Germans – and even Harry Kane – will feel they could have scored far more.

PSG coach, Luis Enrique, speaking about a possible quad-ruple for the French side: “There’s one month left before the end of the season and we can still win all four competitions; we must manage our emotions well and we must not see pressure as a threat.

“It is a beautiful thing to enjoy a special match in a unique stadium in Europe and to have the opportunity to reach the final for our supporters.

“It’s going to be a very good show, there could be a lot of goals.”

More from Edin Terzic:

“In the group stage, we saw a significantly different game against Paris in our stadium. It was a very open match in which we were a bit closer to winning.

“Paris are currently at their peak and we have to top the performance we showed back then. We are confident we will show we have improved.

“I think every opponent aims to stop Kylian Mbappé, but that doesn’t always work. We have to prepare for everything.”

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic spoke about his team’s chances of reaching the Champions League final and explained how he feels that they learned from the previous encounters against PSG.

“You could sense in the return leg that we had learned the lessons from the first game,” Terzic said, “Now PSG look to be at their very peak this season with only one defeat in 2024 and a good run of results.

“We will have to show an improved performance from that in Dortmund. We are confident that will show it tomorrow and next week in Paris.

“The clear goal is to gain a small advantage after the game tomorrow. We know we have to play at least 180 minutes at the highest level to have any shot at our dream.”

Dortmund have only lost one of their previous eight home matches in Uefa competition semi-finals with five wins and two draws.

It is more of a mixed bag for Paris Saint-Germain, though, as they have won only one of their last five matches in the Champions League semi-finals.

However, they did come out on top in the only Uefa competition two-legged tie against BVB – a 3-2 aggregate win in the 2019/20 Champions League round of 16.

This is Borussia Dortmund’s fifth European Cup/Champions League semi-final but their first since they saw off Real Madrid in 2013.

A repeat of the final against Bayern that year could be on the cards if their fellow German side come through their last-four tie against Los Blancos following a 2-2 draw last night.

PSG, meanwhile, are through to their fourth Champions League semi-final, having failed to reach that stage in the European Cup era.

Dortmund vs PSG

These two clubs meet again following their two outings in Group F earlier this season.

Those contests may have left Dortmund with a feeling of what might have been given they were defeated 2-0 by Paris at the Parc des Princes in the first head to head before drawing 1-1 at home.

They had already qualified before that latter encounter on Matchday 6, when they took the lead in a game in which would have meant elimination for PSG if they lost given AC Milan’s victory at Newcastle.

Letting that goal slip could come back to haunt the German side if PSG manage to best them over two legs in the semi-finals.

The Champions League has gone stale and is past the point of no return

17:22 , Mike Jones

If the Champions League this week left you feeling bored - and that’s if you were even watching in the first place - it wasn’t quite the sentiment being shared within Uefa.

There is excitement at the fact the quarter-finals is now close to having one club from each of its major TV markets: that’s England, Spain, Germany and France, with Italy still able to make it five from five. This, in the words of Uefa insiders, is much more important than actually competitive and compelling ties.

It is a motivation that explains how the competition has gone so stale, as well as how the wider European football landscape has completely stagnated. The Champions League is only becoming as predictable as many domestic leagues. Profit has been prioritised over the health of the game, leading to growing financial disparities that are now beginning to existentially threaten the sport’s lifeblood of unpredictability.

This will be the third time that Borussia Dortmund and PSG have faced each other in this season’s Champions League as the teams were drawn in the same group.

The previous fixture in Germany ended in a 1-1 draw after the Parisians had won 2-0 at home. Dortmund have since improved, aided by the return of Jadon Sancho, but a focused and determined PSG may still be too much for them.

Dortmund 1-3 PSG.

Predicted line-ups

17:10 , Mike Jones

Dortmund: Kobel; Wolf, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Ryerson; Can, Sabitzer; Adeyemi, Brandt, Sancho, Fullkrug

PSG: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Hernandez, Nunes; Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Ruiz; Dembele, Mbappe, Barcola

What is the team news?

17:06 , Mike Jones

Edin Terzic will be without Sebastian Haller who has missed the last couple of games with an ankle injury, while Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen and Donyell Malen are both doubts.

Mats Hummels was substituted off in their 4-1 defeat to RB Leipzig at the weekend, but Dortmund hope to have him back for the first leg.

As for PSG, this evening’s game has come too early for long-term absentee Presnel Kimpembe, but they have been boosted by the fact he has returned to individual training.

He is the only player unavailable for Enrique, who rested some of his stars in PSG’s 3-3 draw with Le Havre.

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s Champions League action as Borussia Dortmund take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their semi-final clash.
