Angels place SS Simmons (ankle) on DL

The Los Angeles Angels placed shortstop Andrelton Simmons on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a Grade 2 right ankle sprain.

Utility man Kaleb Cowart was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move.

Simmons departed the Angels' 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday in the third inning after injuring his ankle slipping on the dugout steps shortly before first pitch.

"I don't even remember how exactly it happened, but I know I was coming in," Simmons told reporters. "It's simple and stupid, but it happens every once in a while, I guess."

Simmons was using crutches after the game.

Simmons is hitting .330 with four home runs and 34 RBIs this season. The 28-year-old is known as a defensive stalwart, with three Gold Gloves to his name in seven major league seasons.

Cowart, who turned 26 last week, was hitting .302 with three home runs and 26 RBIs for Salt Lake. The former first-round pick has appeared in two games for the Angels this season, with no hits.
