Current tight ends have earned a shot to lead the Miami Dolphins in 2017

Throughout the many years of my close following of the Miami Dolphins, very few things have remained the same. The quarterback position was a constant conveyor belt, one that always seemed to power the head coach one as well. The defense was always in flux along with the rest of the roster and the team was constantly in the basement.

With the arrival of head coach Adam Gase, many are now hopeful that these constants we have all grown used to will end. Ryan Tannehill will put a stop to the quarterback conveyor, thus ending the use for the head coaching one. The defense will rebound and finally manage some consistency. The Miami Dolphins will be competing for playoff spots year in and year out.

However, one area on the team appears to have not gotten the memo. With Jordan Cameron’s time in Miami likely over, many are already speculating that more turnover will be had at the tight end position. This is the same position that has undergone major shakeups every two to three years throughout the past decade.

The biggest complaint had about the position is the lack of talent. Really? While the position may have needed some change in the past, maybe this is the season we give it a chance at some consistency. Jordan Cameron was a bust in every sense of the word, but what about Dion Sims and MarQueis Gray? Both have played well when called upon, especially this past season.

Sure, the two players may not be the in the top half of NFL tight ends, but they do get the job done. How many times at the end of the season did we see Matt Moore hit either Gray or Sims for a first down? For a big play? For a touchdown? Both have proven their worth at a position that never seems to produce for Miami.

The second big part about why they should be given the starting role next season is the Miami Dolphins strength at wide receiver. Possessing both Jarvis Landry and DeVante Parker already, Miami could also re-sign Kenny Stills to preserve the team’s starting receivers. Without much weight to really carry, Sims and Gray could be given a shot to prove themselves.

Again, the two are not upper level tight end players. However, given the players we’ve treated to at the position in years past, maybe it’s time we let some consistency set in and give both Dion Sims and MarQueis Gray a shot.
