Windthorst returns, Graham tumbles in latest TRN Top 10 football rankings

The TRN Top 10 is subjective. Obviously, the chances of a Class 2A team beating one in 5A is extremely unlikely. And Class A teams play a completely different version of the game. This poll represents the expectations of these teams, reflecting how they rank in district, region and state. Record and previous ranking in parenthesis.

1. Knox City (7-0, 1)Knox City has finished its non-district schedule and enjoys its open week at a perfect 7-0 before starting District 4-A Division I action. The Greyhounds are ranked second in the state by DCTF and PigskinPrep.com, but the Greyhounds have a legit argument to be No. 1.

2. Benjamin (7-0, 2) – Like its Knox County rival, Benjamin is also open this week after opening District 6-A Division II play with a 45-point mercy rule victory against Paducah. But unlike Knox City, there may be a team worthy of challenging the Mustangs in their district. We’re looking at Crowell to step up to the plate.

3. Holliday (5-1, 4) – Since giving up 40 points to Jim Ned in Week 2, Holliday has allowed 14 points in its last four games combined, including three shutouts. Most recently, the Eagles held Valley View to negative yardage (-1) in a 60-0 victory Friday. Valley View managed two first downs.

4. Jacksboro (6-0, 5) – The Tigers may be on the verge of running away with the District 5-3A Division II title. We had their matchup with Comanche this week circled as the area’s best district game, but the Indians have suffered some key injuries and lost to Millsap last week.

5. Rider (4-2, 6)We see Rider’s Friday matchup with Abilene Wylie as the de facto District 2-5A Division II title game. And we’ll maintain that belief unless Plainview can prove us wrong later in the season.

6. Graham (6-1, 3) Dropping Graham three spots in the TRN Top 10 for a one-point loss to Hirschi may seem harsh but consider what that loss entails. As long as Hirschi does what’s expected and runs the table in District 3-4A Division II, the Steers will be the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and likely face a very good Canyon West Plains squad in the second round. The postseason path is much more difficult for the No. 2 seed.

7. Seymour (5-1, 8) – The Panthers come out of the open week with a road trip to Electra. This could be a sneaky test with a big showdown against Windthorst looming in two weeks.

8. Newcastle (6-1, 9) – Newcastle hits its open week with a 6-1 record, losing only to Jonesboro, which is considered a Class A Division I title contender.

9. Windthorst (4-2, NR) – The Trojans are back in the TRN Top 10 after dismantling Petrolia on Friday. They get a final warmup against Munday before drawing county rival Archer City and then Seymour in a possible 7-2A D-II title game.

10. Nocona (6-0, 10) – The Indians nearly exited the TRN Top 10 after lacking style points in a 7-6 victory against Whitewright. But they remain undefeated and fend off Hirschi, Vernon and Henrietta for the final spot.

Dropped out – Vernon (7).

On the rise – Hirschi.
