Week 3 Football Scoreboard: Plymouth wins wild one over Wellington

MANSFIELD — Week 3 is in the books.

For most teams, the nonconference portion of their schedules finished on Friday night and now, it is time for the real football to start. League play begins next week. Let's see who got a nice head start with wins on Friday night.

Richland County Scoreboard

Plymouth 20, Wellington 14

The Plymouth Big Red improved to 2-1 on the season thanks to a solid nonconference win over Wellington on Friday night.

The Big Red struck first after taking the opening kickoff and marching down the field as Layne Bushey finished off a drive that ended with a two-point conversion, an 8-0 lead and just 2:17 left on the first-quarter clock. After Wellington answered with a score to make it 8-6, Plymouth saw Ben Trimmer score just before halftime to make it 14-6 with 3:39 left in the half.

Wellington came back to tie the game at 14 all with 9:22 left in the game and had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but the Big Red came up with a key fumble recovery and capitalized when Eli Keefe scored a touchdown on fourth and goal with 1:28 left in the game. The defense took care of the rest leading the Big Red to a 20-14 victory.

Plymouth hosts Western Reserve in Week 4 to begin Firelands Conference play.

Massillon 51, Mansfield Senior 10

The Mansfield Senior Tygers saw the toughest nonconference schedule in Richland County come to a close on Friday night with a 51-10 loss to Massillon on the road.

After falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, the Tygers got on the board with some stellar defense as Ja'ontay O'Bryant's 27-yard Pick-6 put points up for the TYs to make it 21-7. Mansfield Senior mustered just a 23-yard field goal from Quinten DeBolt the rest of the way.

Duke Reese returned after one game away due to a wrist injury and played well. He threw for 139 yards on 12 completions to go with 36 yards on the ground on 14 carries. Amarr Davis had seven catches for 113 yards to go with 11 yards rushing.

The Tygers (1-2) host West Holmes in Week 4 to open up Ohio Cardinal Conference play with a game that has every indication as the title matchup.

Bellevue 35, Shelby 33

The Shelby Whippets suffered a narrow 35-33 loss to Bellevue on Friday night in their final nonconference game of the season.

The Whippets owned a 14-13 lead after the first quarter as Issaiah Ramsey caught a 13-yard pass from Brayden DeVito and Skyler Winters added a two-yard run as the former Northern Ohio League heavyweights traded punches. Bellevue took a 21-14 lead into halftime and led 29-14 after three before the Whippets made a furious comeback when Casey Lantz scored on a 27-yard pass and a 65-yarder from DeVito but the two-point conversion to tie failed sending Shelby home with a tough loss.

DeVito had himself a night yet again completing 19-of-29 passes for 372 yards and four touchdowns with an interception. He ran for just two yards. Ramsey caught eight passes for 127 yards and ran for 30 yards on just two carries. Lantz caught two passes for 92 yards while Miles Swisher added five catches for 77 yards.

The Whippets (2-1) travel to Marion Harding in Week 4.

Highland 50, Crestview 26

The Crestview Cougars took a tough 50-26 loss to Highland on Friday night to complete their nonconference schedule.

Liam Kuhn completed 8-of-17 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions as Karter Goon hauled in seven of those passes and all 131 yards with both scores. Wade Bolin returned for his first game of the 2023 season and recorded 77 rushing yards on just five carries while Ayden Reymer added 38 yards on 13 carries and Kuhn collected 26 yards on eight touches. Clete Rogers also added 36 yards on 10 carries.

Crestview (1-2) hosts Monroeville in Week 4 to open Firelands Conference play.
