See who readers picked as the Savannah Morning News Athlete of the Week in an open poll

The basketball action in Savannah was fast and furious last week as three teams from the Hostess City advanced to the GHSA State semifinals in Johnson, Savannah High and Benedictine.

Johnson is the last team standing after the Atom Smashers beat Dougherty on Saturday night at Savannah State to punch their ticket to the Class 3A State finals where they will meet up with Sandy Creek on Friday, March 8, with tipoff set for 3 p.m.

There were some impressive individual performances in a variety of sports last week, and readers weighed in to select the Savannah Morning News Athlete of the Week in an open poll.

Johnson basketball player Cormari Jones was the winner as the senior racked in 89.43% of the vote. His teammate, Favion Kirkwood, was second and Jermaine Edwards of the Savannah High basketball team was third.

Cormari Jones, Johnson

The senior guard scored 17 points in the semifinals win over Dougherty and had 13 points, five assists and five rebounds without a turnover in a quarterfinal win over Hebron Christian.

Favion Kirkwood, Johnson

The junior standout had 27 points and seven rebounds in the win over Hebron Christian and had 15 points in the semifinal victory over Dougherty.

Jermaine Edwards, Savannah High

In his final game for The High, the senior had 14 points and 10 rebounds in a state semifinal loss to Paideia.

Caleb Jones, Benedictine

The standout junior scored 20 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals in a Final Four loss to Holy Innocents' and had 30 points with five rebounds and three assists in an overtime win over Seckinger in the state quarterfinals.

Ryan Wallace, Calvary Day

The junior struck out seven and didn't walk a batter while allowing just one hit in five innings in a 2-0 win over Allatoona.

Amelia Reci, Savannah Arts

The sophomore scored a pair of goals in a 2-0 win over Toombs County and has already has 16 goals on the season for the Panthers (6-2).

Kayley Wedlow, Bryan County

In her final high school game, the senior scored 17 points for Bryan County in a state quarterfinal loss at Rabun County.

Harris Stone, Savannah Country Day

Stone helped lead the SCD girls soccer team to win overs Beach and Groves as she had five goals and five assists in the two victories.

Robby Holden, Islands

The senior pitched four innings, striking out six, and also hit a double, as he combined with Ben Fernandez and Brendan Lanigan to pitch a no-hitter against McIntosh County Academy.

Landon Ludwig, Benedictine

The junior earned a win over Statesboro by striking out seven in three hitless innings, while going 3 for 4 with a double, triple and five RBIs at the plate.

Jayden White, Savannah Christian

The Georgia Southern signee had a three-run homer and drove in four runs in a 12-2 win at Metter.

Tyler Scott, Savannah Country Day

The junior gave up just one hit in five innings and fanned 10 batters in a 10-0 win over Richmond Hill.

Ben Fernandez, Islands

The senior hit a pair of triples and threw a hitless inning as he combined with Robby Holden and Brendan Lanigan to throw a no-hitter in a win over MCA.
