----------------------------------------------------------

The Coloradoan is proud to present our weekly Athlete of the Week series for this high school year, partnering with Blue Federal Credit Union to honor the best Fort Collins-area high school athletes.

There are five nominees every week, and fans can vote every Monday through Wednesday at coloradoan.com/sports/high-school-sports.

As we hit the new calendar year, here is the 14th edition of the 2023-24 school year for the week of Jan. 7-13.

You can find the ballot at the bottom of the page. Voting is open until 11 p.m. Wednesday each week, with the winner announced on Thursday at Coloradoan.com and via the Coloradoan's Instagram page.

Previous winner: Fort Collins wrestler Ben Rios named Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week

Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Sunday) and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the five nominees each week.

If you have nominations for a future Athlete of the Week, please send them via email to ChrisAbshire@coloradoan.com for consideration.

The following athletes were nominated for their performances last week:

  • John Backhaus, Windsor boys basketball: The Wizards' junior exploded for 50 points across three games as Windsor crushed three league foes by over 40 points per game. Backhaus made 12 3-pointers, grabbed 16 rebounds and added four steals across the three contests, including a 24-point outing at Greeley West.

  • Connor Jacquot, Fossil Ridge wrestling: The SaberCats senior continued his stellar season, winning the 190-pound title at Eaglecrest's Rodriguez Tournament of Champions on Saturday. Jacquot took down two Eaglecrest wrestlers at home plus Rocky Mountain's Cooper Andrews to back up a runner-up spot at last week's Torgy tournament with a top finish.

  • Ellayna Potter, PSD girls skiing: The Stars (or Prairie Dogs, as they're nicknamed) junior impressed in PSD's home race at Hoedown Hill in Windsor, the first-ever nordic high school meet on the Front Range. Potter won the 5-kilometer girls skate on a grueling course in 17:50, besting teammate Clara Statkus by six seconds in a highly competitive race.

  • Cade Shortridge, PSD boys skiing: The Stars senior also put PSD in the winner's circle at Hoedown Hill. Shortridge broke from the pack early and cruised home in 13:54, more than a minute ahead of three PSD teammates that came in second through fourth, to win the 5k boys skate.

  • Kavi Voglund, Poudre girls basketball: The Impalas junior narrowly gets the nomination in a crowded girls hoops field after a busy week. She dropped a combined 43 points with 17 rebounds and eight steals as Poudre posted a 2-1 mark. Voglund is now one of four city players among the top-10 Front Range League scorers.
