Texas Tech baseball takeaways: Texas hits Kyle Robinson hard on cold night

The Texas Tech baseball team and Texas were headed in opposite directions going into their opening Big 12 series, No. 17 Tech on a seven-game win streak and No. 22 Texas on a four-game losing streak.

Which means nothing, apparently.

The Longhorns pounded the Red Raiders 22-8 on a cold Friday night at Dan Law Field/Rip Griffin Park, hanging 11 runs on Tech starting pitcher Kyle Robinson and five on Zane Petty, the first man out of the bullpen.

Texas' 4-5-6 hitters Porter Brown, Rylan Galvan and Max Belyeu homered for the Longhorns (8-5, 1-0), and Brown and Galvan drove in five runs apiece. Belyeu's three-run drive in the first made it 4-0. Brown followed Peyton Powell's two-run single in the fourth with a three-run homer for 11-4, and Galvan unloaded a grand slam in the fifth.

Will Gasparino capped a 5-for-6 game with a ninth-inning grand slam.

Damian Bravo, Austin Green and Will Burns hit solo homers for Tech (10-3, 0-1), and Davis Rivers had a two-run double.

The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Here are quick takeaways.

A great matchup deserves better weather

At game time, the National Weather Service showed it was 40 degrees in Lubbock, a 20-mph north wind gusting to 30 and the wind-chill factor at 30 degrees. By the ninth inning, it was 36 degrees, still with an 18-mph north wind.

That made for some sloppy play. Tech scored three runs without a hit in the second inning, benefiting by three walks, two errors, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a stolen base.

Texas Tech pitcher Kyle Robinson's ERA suffered

The Red Raiders' righthander went 3 2/3 innings, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits and three walks. His earned-run average shot up from 3.14 to 8.00.

Robinson (2-2) had allowed more than three earned runs only once in his previous 16 appearances, 12 in relief.

The third out was painfully elusive

Texas scored 10 of its first 11 runs with two outs. Robinson struck out Rylan Galvan for the second out in the first inning, but with two runners on, Max Belyeu belted a three-run shot.

In the fourth, Robinson also had a chance to escape with minimal damage when he struck out leadoff batter Jared Thomas for the second out and nothing across in the inning. Then the Longhorns rocked Robinson for two singles, Brown's homer, two walks and Kimble Schuessler's two-run double before he was lifted.

Texas outfielder Porter Brown homered and drove in five runs Friday night, helping the 22nd-ranked Longhorns beat No. 17 Texas Tech in a series opener at Dan Law Field/Rip Griffin Park. It was the first Big 12 game of the season for both teams, who play again at 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
