Preview and how to watch Texas Tech baseball vs. Texas

The Texas Tech baseball team and Texas are set to open Big 12 play against each other this weekend, meaning it's time for another discussion of whether the two teams should keep meeting as non-conference opponents after the Longhorns depart for the SEC.

Add Tim Tadlock to the list of people who want to maintain the rivalry.

"If we could schedule them next year (in) week four, I think you'd sign up for it," the Tech coach said Thursday. "I think our kids love playing them. I think there's a lot of tradition and history with Texas baseball. When I say that, the state of Texas baseball; obviously, the University of Texas included in that."

The two teams square off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday on the Red Raiders' turf. No. 17 Tech (10-2) has won seven games in a row, and No. 24 Texas (7-5) has lost four in a row, though all to good programs: No. 2 LSU, Texas State, No. 10 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Texas A&M.

Texas departs for the SEC at the end of the school year.

"I would think Kirby (Hocutt), Chris Del Conte would have a relationship where we could talk about playing baseball, at least a double midweek (two-game series) or something like that," Tadlock said, referring to the schools' athletics directors. "But no guarantees either."

Tadlock acknowledged Tech and UT getting together in baseball "could be hard."

"We've made an attempt to play (Texas) A&M for 11 years outside of tournaments," he said, "and haven't had any success. I think you could run into the exact same thing."

Tadlock said it's defensible for teams who have left the Big 12 to not play Texas Tech in baseball because, "if they go .500 in that league, they get into a regional. They start biting off teams that could beat them outside of conference, it could (damage their NCAA regional chances)."
