Texas Tech baseball pitcher Brady Trombello released from hospital

Texas Tech baseball pitcher Brady Trombello, who was struck in the head by a batted ball during a Feb. 26 workout, has been released from University Medical Center, the Tech athletics department announced Friday.

Tech's statement said Trombello has been transferred to a local rehabilitation facility and is expected to make a full recovery, though he won't pitch again this season. The freshman righthander was injured six days after he made his college debut with four scoreless innings as the starter in a 13-1 victory over Texas-Arlington.

He underwent surgery the night he was hurt.

"Texas Tech athletics would like to thank its sports medicine staff, the coaching staff, the paramedics, doctors and nurses who all aided in providing emergency assistance in the moments following Brady’s injury as well as in his recovery from surgery," Tech's statement said. "While his recovery continues, Brady has remained positive and is actively walking and talking with his friends and family. In the immediate aftermath of his injury, Texas Tech arranged transportation for Brady’s parents to be by his side from their home state of Washington.

"Since his injury, Brady has received countless visits from his teammates as well as Coach (Tim) Tadlock and his staff. Even though he will not take the mound for the Red Raiders again this season, Brady will remain an active member of our baseball program and part of the success of this team. He has the full support of this baseball program and our entire athletics department as he continues his recovery."

Tech did not publicly acknowledge Trombello's injury until 48 hours after the fact, at which time it reported he had suffered "a medical emergency." The school did not confirm he suffered a head injury from a batted ball until Friday.

Trombello is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound righthander from Ridgefield, Washington. He attended Prairie High School, which produced two longtime former Major League players: pitcher Alan Embree and first baseman Richie Sexson.
