Summerfield freshman Hornbeak puts varied talents on display

PETERSBURG – Summerfield boys basketball coach Phil Schiffler better write in pencil the next three years.

Freshman Jha Jha Hornbeak had a breakout freshman season for Bulldogs, filling up the stat sheets in what looks like will be a record-setting career.

“What he was able to do as a freshman was unreal,” Schiffler said. “We could rely on him to do a lot of everything and that’s just not normal for a ninth grader at the varsity level.”

In compiling the final statistics for the Monroe County Region, Hornbeak’s name kept coming up near the top in almost every category.

He led in assists (4.3) and steals per game (3.7) and also averaged 12.3 points and 4.8 rebounds and even made the list of top shot blockers.

Schiffler was not surprised that Hornbeak led in assists.

“We made a transition to put the ball into his hands because he is such a phenomenal passer,” Schiffler said. “People may not realize that passing is probably his best attribute, and that’s rare for a kid who has the ability to score at such a high clip like he does.”

Schiffler said it’s possible that Hornbeak could average a double-double at some point and put up some triple doubles along the way.

“I’m so excited to watch his growth over the next three years and see where he can help lead our program,” the second-year Bulldog coach said.

Flat Rock’s Alex Gillum led the Region with 35 blocked shots and tied Buddy Snodgrass of St. Mary Catholic Central for the rebounding lead. Both pulled down 10.1 boards a game.

Braiden Whitaker was the scoring champion with an average of 23.8 points a game, more than five points more than runner-up Graham Junge of Flat Rock.

Junge was the top 3-point shooter with 77.
