Steve Cottingham out as Colorado State deputy director of athletics

A sea of changes in Colorado State athletics this week has continued.

Deputy director of athletics Steve Cottingham announced his retirement — effective immediately — on Thursday.

It comes days after CSU President Amy Parsons removed Joe Parker as athletic director.

In an email sent by Cottingham on Thursday, he cited changes in his decision to leave by, in part, writing: “I only know how to do my job by throwing my entire self into it and find that it is not in my heart to do so for the current leadership.” Cottingham's departure and email were first reported by Brady Hull of KFKA and later confirmed by the Coloradoan.

He has been removed from CSU’s online staff directory as of Friday morning.

Cottingham joined CSU athletics in 2012 and for years has served a role overseeing the fiscal and operational side of the department.

Cottingham resigned as athletic director at Marquette while its athletic department dealt with sexual misconduct issues prior to his time at CSU. Cottingham was criticized for his handling of sexual assault allegations at CSU. He was the administrator in charge of overseeing former men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy after investigations into Eustachy’s conduct.

John Weber has stepped in as interim athletic director at CSU. CSU has not announced an interim replacement for Cottingham.
