SC high school girls and boys lacrosse state championships: How to watch, what to know

Riverside’s girls lacrosse and Greenville’s boys lacrosse will play for South Carolina high school state championships in the Class AAAA division Saturday at Irmo High School in Columbia.

Riverside won the Class AAAAA state title in 2021 and will be making its third finals appearance in four years. The Warriors (17-2) last week beat Christ Church Episcopal, 23-9, to win the Upper State.

Greenville won the all-classifications state title in 2010 and made it back to the finals a year later. The Red Raiders (14-3) earlier this week beat A.C. Flora, 15-10, to advance.

Champions will be decided in Class AAAAA and Class AAAA, which includes all schools in the lower four SCHSL classifications.

Riverside girls lacrosse players to watch

Bella Bright, Jr., midfielder: Bright ranks fifth in the state with 90 goals and fourth in points with 128. She became a draw specialist this season as well and wins those at a 57.3 percent. Bright has scored 189 goals in her career. She had seven goals in the Upper State title game. She is committed to Florida Southern.

Marianna Lopez, Sr., goalkeeper: Lopez three years ago as a freshman was brought up after her junior varsity season and immediately inserted into the starting lineup in the playoffs. Riverside won the state championship. Lopez has increased her save percentage this season from 40.1 to 51.3. She will play in college at Mars Hill.

Greenville boys lacrosse players to watch

Doug Landrum, Sr., defense: Landrum pushes up as a long-stick midfielder and not only triggers fast breaks but often finishes them. He ranks sixth in the state in takeaways and 11th in ground ball recoveries, but also has scored 28 goals, fourth-best on the team. He had three goals and two assists in the state semifinals game.

Will Wright, Jr., attack: Wright leads Riverside with 61 points, being second on the team with 35 goals (only one behind senior Clayton Williams) and 25 assists (one behind junior Capers Gross). The Warriors lost Christian Carbonell (30 goals) to injury last week. If he's out, it puts that much more on Wright's shoulders.
