Roundup: Seniors lead Granville field hockey to shutout of Olentangy Orange

A trio of seniors found the back of the cage Thursday, powering the Granville field hockey team to a 3-0 shutout of visiting Olentangy Orange.

Zoe Gravitt scored off a Bella Rockwell assist in the first half. Rockwell later scored off a Cassidy Predieri assist on a penalty corner, and Lucy Walters’ goal capped the scoring for the Blue Aces.

“We have such a family sense on the team, and (the seniors) lead that,” said Granville coach Sydney Super, whose program also honored Gabrielle Graves, Olivia Graves and Evie Young before the match. "They bring such a great atmosphere to the team. They all played their hearts out. It was fantastic.”

VOLLEYBALL

NC clinches Cardinal

Kylie Gibson distributed 37 assists for Newark Catholic in a sweep at Utica, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20, clinching the Licking County League-Cardinal Division championship for the Green Wave.

Natalie Harrington totaled 15 kills, two aces and two blocks, Fini Kaiser 10 kills and Ava Heffley two aces and 17 digs for the Green Wave (17-4, 14-0).

Alexa Gosnell had three kills and five assists, Hannah Shaver five kills and Lexi Wiegand 15 digs for Utica (9-11, 4-9).

Watkins knocks off Granville

Riley Buechner’s 11 kills and 28 assists fueled Watkins Memorial in a victory at Granville, 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10, in LCL-Buckeye Division play, dropping the Blue Aces (11-9, 8-4) into a first-place tie with Licking Heights with two matches left.

Ella Barbour added 12 kills and seven aces, Adalyn Rhodes, Micha Weekley and Addie Hatzo a combined 20 kills and 14 blocks and Lizzie Bricker 21 digs for the Warriors (4-15, 4-8).

Northridge beats Lakewood

Kenzie Giffin’s seven kills and six blocks boosted Northridge to a victory against visiting Lakewood, 25-19, 25-20, 15-25, 25-14, in LCL-Cardinal play.

Maddie VanScoy added five kills and Tristan Orahood 20 digs for the Vikings (8-12, 4-9), who also received contributions from seniors Brooke Smith, Kylee Cramer and Madison Hoover.

Aubrey Howell totaled 23 kills, Charlee Palmer 17 kills and five aces, Josie Lynch 46 assists and Kenna Parkison 16 digs for the Lancers (5-15, 1-12).

Johnstown outlasts Heath

Johnstown recovered from seeing a 2-0 lead disappear to earn a five-set victory, 26-24, 25-17, 17-25, 22-25, 15-10, at Heath.

Audrey McCrady notched 13 kills, Kylie Sharp 12 kills, Emily Yanczura 41 assists and Avery Duey five aces and 10 digs for the Johnnies (15-3, 11-2).

Logan Johnston and Kinley Kaminsky recorded 18 kills and three blocks apiece, and Ansley Harbage and Ysa Barcelona added a combined 52 assists and Caroline Robertson 38 digs for the Bulldogs (10-8, 9-4).

Newark cruises

Makayla Meister recorded 12 kills and Callie Pangborn 11 for Newark in a victory at Central Crossing (11-8, 2-6), 25-20, 25-17, 25-9, in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Charlee Thompson added three kills, three aces and 28 assists, Meher Woughter six kills and Sadey Queen two aces and eight digs for the Wildcats (16-4, 6-2).

GIRLS SOCCER

Watkins wins

Jaylyn Thornton’s five goals led Watkins Memorial to a 12-0 victory at Heath in LCL play.

Kiley Jones-Barrera added two goals and Zoey Thompson, Rilyn Warner, Madison Skeese, Ella Perry and Madyson Golden one each. Kiley Jones-Barrera had a team-high four assists and Kiera McKittrick and Kenzey Jones-Barrera two apiece for the Warriors (10-2-2, 6-1), who host Granville next Thursday with an opportunity to force a three-way tie for the LCL title.

Sophia Yanka made 10 saves and Hailey Cash five for the Bulldogs (2-13-1, 1-7).

Northridge wins

Macey Van Fossen and Evangeline Stein scored twice apiece in Northridge’s 5-0 victory against visiting Lakewood (4-9, 0-7) in LCL play.

Ava Travis added a goal and two assists and Mikalynn Adkins and Noelette Neville an assist apiece for the Vikings (8-5-1, 2-4-1). Ava Kercher made five saves.

Johnstown rolls

Cameron Goddard piled up six goals in Johnstown’s 7-1 victory at Zanesville (5-8, 3-4) in LCL play.

Jordan Ellis also scored for the Johnnies (8-6-1, 4-3), and Kylee Wade added three assists and Payton Schneider, Madison McKee and Cassidy Muller one each. Anna Eckard made four saves.

BOYS SOCCER

Watkins blanks Mount Vernon

Jonny Murphy made four saves to preserve Watkins Memorial’s 1-0 shutout at Mount Vernon.

Andy Sanchez scored for the Warriors (10-5) on a penalty kick late in the first half.

Newark edged on road

Groveport’s three late goals sent visiting Newark to a 4-1 loss in OCC-Buckeye play.

Sean Brechbill made a penalty kick drawn by Ayden Bidwell to tie the game in the second half for the Wildcats (0-14-2, 0-4). Quentin Jacks made 12 saves behind a defense led by James Daugherty and Layton Shaner.
