Regional Softball: Viera, Melbourne, Bayside, Eau Gallie advance to region semifinals

Region 4-5A

Bayside 10, American 0 (six innings)

PALM BAY — No. 5 Bayside scored 10 runs and held No. 4 American scoreless to move on to the regional semifinals of the Class 5A state tournament.

The Bears took a lead early in the first inning when Brooke Lemke got hit a that scored Haleigh Curry. Bayside held a 1-0 lead up until Leah Acker's single allowed Karlee Guerry to score and Curry hit a double that brought home Bayside's third run of the game in the fourth inning.

In the following inning, Hannah Dollar extended Bayside's lead by three when she hit a three-run home run. The Bears would go on to score four more runs in the game.

For its next game, Bayside (16-7) will travel to Fort Lauderdale to face No. 1 Archbishop McCarthy (14-5) on May 14.

Region 3-6A

Melbourne 15, Dwyer 0 (three innings)

The Bulldogs picked up a 15-0 win over No. 7 Dwyer to continue their undefeated season. No. 2 Melbourne (28-0) will host No. 3 George Jenkins (22-6) on May 14 in the region semifinals.

Melbourne pitcher Jasmine Francik had nine strikeouts and as a batter Francik had three hits and three RBIs. Rylie Mecchella had two hits, four RBIs, and scored two runs for the Bulldogs.

Viera 5, Seminole Ridge 0

No. 4 Viera (19-8) defeated No. 5 Seminole Ridge on the road to advance to the next round of the Region 3-6A tournament. The Hawks will face No. 1 Bartow (27-1) on May 14.

Haley Rider led the way for the Hawks with two home runs, three RBIs, two hits and two runs. Addy Berry struck out 11 batters in the win for Viera.

Region 2-4A

Eau Gallie 14, Rockledge 0 (five innings)

MELBOURNE — After scoring eight runs in the second inning, No. 3 Eau Gallie defeated No. 6 Rockledge to advance to the next round of the regional tournament.

In the first inning, Sara Walsh hit a single that allowed Shyla Eppert to run home to score Eau Gallie's first run of the game.

Deborah Turko's hit scored the Commodores' second run and got the scoring started for the Commodores in their high-scoring second inning. Walsh, Emma-Lea Cabral, and Heather Rue would go on to collect RBIs in the inning for Eau Gallie as well.

Rockledge had two runners on base in the third inning but were unable to score in the inning. The Raiders finish their season with a record of 13-11.

The Commodores improve to 16-6 and will go on the road for their game against Lake Region in the next round on May 14. No. 2 Lake Region has a record of 20-7 ahead of the game.

Region 2-2A

No. 6 Melbourne Central Catholic fell to No. 3 Academy at the Lakes 6-3 in regional quarterfinals. The Hustlers close out their season with a record of 11-9 and as District 8-2A champions.

Region 2-3A

In the Class 3A state tournament, No. 2 Santa Fe defeated No. 7 Astronaut, 7-1. Astronaut finished the season as winner of the District 8-3A championship and with a 14-9 record.
