Purdue dials up awesome fake kneel down play for huge gain (Video)

Purdue is playing in its first bowl game in five years and is having a lot of fun doing so.

The Boilermakers weren’t expected to reach a bowl in Jeff Brohm’s first season as head coach. The program combined for just nine wins over the previous four seasons, but Brohm led the team to a 6-6 record and a spot in the Foster Farms Bowl against Arizona.

Brohm has called trick plays all year, and pulled out possibly the best one yet late in the first half.

It’s a little hard to tell what happened there, so let’s paint the picture. Purdue, up 28-14, had just regained possession after a fumble by Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate. At its own 32-yard line with 56 seconds left in the half, it looked like Purdue would just take a knee and go into halftime up 14.

Nope.

Instead, the Boilermakers FAKED the kneel down with quarterback Elijah Sindelar sneakily handing the ball off to D.J. Knox for a 30-yard gain. This replay gives you the perfect view of how it worked.

Knox actually waited a second before taking off to the left as Sindelar pretended he was rolling right for an option play. The Arizona defense was totally fooled and Knox was able to pick up 30 yards.

After the game Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said the officials told his players not to rush the passer on a play where Purdue was supposedly kneeling.

Brohm says it’s a play his team practices.

Six plays after the fake kneel, Purdue added a field goal to increase its lead to 31-14 at halftime and went on to win by three, 38-35.

Brohm dialed up a few flea flickers during the first half, but this fake kneel play — which his former school, Western Kentucky, ran in its bowl last year — was the coolest play he called.
