Petoskey shutout streak ends, undefeated season continues on Wegmann game-winner

GAYLORD — Everyone knew the Petoskey girls’ soccer team wasn’t going to be putting together a season of shutouts every night out.

So each that came during a six-game shutout streak to begin the season was special for the Northmen to take in.

The question of when that first goal against would actually come was answered Tuesday when Petoskey visited Gaylord and finally had one slip past in the first half.

Petoskey eventually kept the unbeaten streak alive, however, pulling out with a 2-1 win in the final seconds of play.

“The girls showed a lot of resolve to eke out a come-from-behind win on the road,” Petoskey coach Zach Jonker said. “Gaylord is young and ahead of schedule. This was their first loss. They have a really dangerous team going forward and defensively they kept us off the board in the run of play tonight.”

Gaylord (4-1-2) dominated much of the first 30 minutes in Jonker’s eyes, which led to that early first half goal to slip past PHS keeper Sadie Corey.

“Sadie did really well at full stretch to make the initial save but Gaylord was first to the close-range rebound,” added Jonker. “Gaylord was dominant in the first half, They have two forwards with a ton of pace and both of them put us under pretty much continuous pressure.”

Petoskey’s first score came off the leg of Lauren Cole, who hit a penalty kick with 11 minutes remaining to make it a 1-1 game.

It wasn’t until an Annika Gandhi free kick with 20 seconds left that the game finally flipped in favor of Petoskey. Gandhi served the ball into the box, where Haidyn Wegmann got the touch and sent it home for the game-winner.

While Petoskey moved to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Big North, the night proved just what Jonker already knew.

“There are no nights off in the league this year,” Jonker added. “Another tough one at TC West on Thursday.”
