Blackwell, Marlow neck and neck in Class 3A boys tournament

Blackwell and Marlow are having a close battle in the Class 3A boys tournament, with Blackwell leading 36-33½.

Those two programs have been the best in Class 3A in recent years, and this season is no different.

Marlow beat Blackwell in the dual state tournament finals earlier this month, while Blackwell won dual state and the state tournament last season. Those victories snapped Marlow’s two-year championship streaks in both tournaments.

Among Blackwell’s top wrestlers is junior 215-pounder Kruz Goff, who has a 35-1 record this season after pinning Mangum sophomore Trey Williams in the quarterfinals. Goff won the 190-pound state title last year and the 195-pound crown as a freshman.

Senior 120-pounder Marcus Williams is one of Marlow’s best wrestlers.

Williams, who will continue his career at Arkansas-Little Rock, won three state titles in New Mexico before transferring from Rio Rancho to Marlow.

Williams is 21-2 this season and pinned Watonga junior Dakota Cox in the quarterfinals.

Cache leads in Class 5A girls tournament

It’s a tight race atop the standings in the Class 5A girls tournament.

Cache leads but not by much. The Bulldogs have 18 points, while Harrah and McLoud are tied for second with 16, and Little Axe is in the No. 4 spot with 14.

Cache had three wrestlers — CJ Landry (110 pounds), Victorya Cox (115) and Zoe Bennett (140) — who won their wrestle-in match before advancing and beating Class 5A East Regional champions in the quarterfinals.

Landry, Cox and Bennett each pinned their two opponents Thursday.

Cache finished in a tie for second place at the Class 5A West Regional last week. The Bulldogs and McLoud each had 169 points, while Harrah won with 177.
