Newtown victim's father to throw out first pitch for Rangers
The father of a student who died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings will step out on the mound to deliver the ceremonial first pitch at the Texas Rangers' home opener April 5 against the Angels.
Robbie Parker's 6-year-old daughter, Emilee, was one of the 27 victims in Newtown, Conn. Parker grew up in Texas and enjoyed taking her to major-league games.
Joining him on the mound for the Texas opener will be daughters Madeline and Samantha and wife Alissa.
Major League Baseball is planning to honor the victims during the opening week of the season with players and coaches wearing a commemorative ribbon patch and by observing a pregame moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the Dec. 14 shootings.
Parker said in January that he was proud to be a part of the Rangers' fan base.
"I am glad I was able to share the community with my precious daughter and that the same community has reached out to her and let our family know that she is remembered and loved," Parker said through his brother, Jeremie, on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM in January. "Thank you for all you have done to support our family through this time. Go Rangers!"
