Monday's MetroWest and Milford area Fantastic Five high school athletes from the weekend
That bright orb in the sky is the sun, which is easy to forget with how rare its appearances have been to start the season. Don't look directly at it, but its presence allows most spring high school sports to happen.
These Fantastic Five MetroWest and Milford area athletes didn't let the sunshine go to waste.
They excelled on the diamond, track and court, leading their teams to victory with statistically significant performances.
Without further ado, the MetroWest and Milford area Fantastic Five high school athletes from the weekend:
SOPHIA BECKETT, Wayland softball
The sophomore struck out 20 in a 12-1 win over Watertown on Friday. She also circumnavigated the bases for an inside the park home run with no errors and belted two triples for the Warriors (1-0).
RILEY CAUFIELD, Millis softball
The senior punched out nine batters, registering the 500th strikeout of her career in a 14-2 win over Bristol County on Friday. Freshman catcher also launched a grand slam. Millis (1-1) seniors Izzy Jewett and Abby Powers drove in four runs each.
AVERIE DENELLE, Tri-County girls track & field
She contributed to four event wins, as the Cougars went 1-1 on Friday. Denelle was first in the triple jump (33 feet, 7 inches), high jump (5-2), 100-meter hurdles (16 seconds) and ran o the winning 4x100 relay (55.2). Tri-County beat Blue Hills 83-53 and fell 89-47 against Diman. Ivy Young took first in the javelin (70-3), second in the discus (66-7) and sixth in the shot put (20-0).

HENRY GOLDBERG, Framingham boys lacrosse
The senior captain was everywhere Saturday with seven goals and four assists in a 17-2 win over Newton South. Freshman Matthew Tearcy contributed three goals and three assists, while Alex Trierweiler also added a hat trick for Framingham (1-0, 1-0 Bay State Conference). Flyers freshman Connor Claflin scored twice, while Owen Warren and Noah Albright found the ne once each. Framingham's Jonah Sisitsky won 9-of-12 face offs, and Will Corton made 10 saves.

MACKENZIE DUFFY, Tri-County softball
She drove in eight runs on a 3-for-3 day Friday, as the Cougars took out Blackstone-Millivlle 28-5 in 4 1/2 innings. Duffy homered twice, launching a three-run blast in the second inning and a grand slam in the third. Ava Cossette and Breann MacMillan each contributed two hits for Tri-County (2-0). Cougars pitcher Elle Marshall earned the win with nine strikeouts and allowed just four hits.

WELLESLEY 11, Natick 8: Charlie Carpenter notched two hits and two RBIs for the Raiders (1-0, 1-0 BSC), who won their opener Saturday.
XAVERIAN 2, Holliston 1: Albert Savino had two hits, including a double and scored a run for the Panthers (1-1) on Saturday. Holliston's teddy Peters added a hit and an RBI, while Sam Schoenberg and Arav Prajapati contributed a hit each.

BELLINGHAM 16, Dover-Sherborn 4: Jacobi Houston and Trisha Corshia drove in three runs each for the Blackhawks (1-1) on Friday. Bellingham's Cassidy Leger launched a homer and added two RBIs, while Mackenzie Johnson tripled twice.
HUDSON 8, AMSA 5: Lauren O'Malley had two hits and two RBIs Sunday, as the Hawks (1-0) won their opener. Hudson's Liv Sousa (two runs) and Liv Connoly each drove in one with a hit. AMSA's Madleyn Glynn had two RBIs and a double. Ava McLeod (RBI) and Grace Calvin each doubled for the Eagles (1-1), and Gulamina Yost launched a home run with two RBIs.
Boys lacrosse
FRANKLIN 20, Stoughton 0: Drew Hansen poured in four goals with an assist for the Panthers on Thursday. Zach Langevin posted five points with two goals and three assists, while Eddie O'Brien contributed two goals and two assists. Matthew Corvi and Sam Freedman combine d for the Franklin (2-0, 2-0 Hockomock) shutout.
TRI-COUNTY 8, Blue Hills 7 (OT): Dylan Sullivan netted the overtime winner among his four goals for the Cougars (1-2, 1-1 Mayflower) on Friday. He also won 15-of-17 face offs.
HOPKINTON 7, Ashland 6: Logan Delponte scored three times for the Hillers on Friday. Ashland's Griffin Oliveto put away three goals, while Alex Dinsdale scored twice for the Clockers (0-3, 0-3 TVL). Ashland goalie Chalrie Linehan made 13 saves.
ALGONQUIN 17, Leominster 1: Jack Gulachenski put away a hat trick with three assists for the Titans (2-0) on Friday. Algonquin's Ryan Roman scored four times, and Declan Mulkerin added two goals.
WELLESLEY 11, Natick 7: James Nolan put away six goals for the Raiders (1-0) on Friday, five in the fourth quarter. Wellesley goalie Owen Hamburger saved 12 shots.
Girls lacrosse
MEDWAY 16, Norton 6: Olivia Melanson and Ella Taylor each scored four goals Thursday, as the Mustangs took down Norton 16-6 on Thursday. Molly Johnson contributed a hat trick for Medway (2-1).

WELLESLEY 13, Concord-Carlisle 6: Tara Battaglino poured in four goals with an assist Saturday for the Raiders (1-0). Wellesley's Olivia Comella and Alexandra Papavassiliou each notched a hat trick.
Boys volleyball
NIPMUC 3, Bellingham 2: Zach Mantegani posted a massive double-double with 18 kills and 18 digs to go along with two aces for the Blackhawks on Thursday. Aidan Gibbs distributed 27 assists with seven digs for Bellingham (1-2, 1-1 TVL), which fell 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11.

MARLBOROUGH 3, Ayer-Shirley 1: Guilherme Garcia put down 18 kills with three aces for the Panthers (3-1) in a 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-9 victory Friday. Marlborough setter Caebe Pereira dished out 26 assists.
KEEFE TECH 3, Framingham 0: C.J. Sok put down 10 kills with seven digs Friday in a 25-13, 25-17, 25-10 victory for the Broncos (3-1). Keefe Tech's Bryan Costa pulled up 10 digs with four aces, while John Loga distributed 16 assists with eight digs.

MARLBOROUGH 5, Hopedale 0: Sumair Singh prevailed 8-1 in his varsity debut at No. 3 singles for the Panthers (1-0) on Friday. Marlborough swept the No. 1 and 2 singles spots 8-0, as Maurya Virmano beat Ethan DeWolf, and Manraaj Singh took out Matthew Miller. In doubles, Simon Valentino and Keshav Kumar bested Hopedale's Dom Costanza and Carthre Lachiatto 8-4. Ethan Kwan and Alex Resendes won 8-4 against Gavin Pavia and Brady Droeske of Hopedale (1-1)
WESTBOROUGH 5, Wachusett 0: The Rangers lineup only lost two games total in a season-opening sweep Friday. Kaden Chen topped Dylan Chitm 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Srinjoy Ghosh handled Brandon Le 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Westborough's No. 3 Jordan Hlawek took out Nathan Tran 6-0, 6-0. Michael Ku and Brendan Estephan won 6-1, 6-0 against Lam Quach and Nich Smith at No. 1 doubles, while Tyyer Lattanzio and Jorge Garcia Gonzalzalez beat Son Quach and Ray Zhang 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.
Girls tennis
NASHOBA 3, Algonquin 2: No. 2 singles player Siyona Bhagwar prevailed 6-3, 6-1 over Maryam Mulyono for the Tians (1-1, 0-1 Mid Wach A). Algonquin's No. 1 doubles team of Claire Wallace and Becca White beat Grace Hanley and Audrey Russell 6-3, 6-2.
Boys track & field
TRI-COUNTY 72, Blue Hills 64; DIMAN 69, Tri-County 67: The Cougars swept the discus podium, as senior Ammar Ahmed captured the title at 116-8 followed by James O'Brien (100-3) and Nate Howard (78-2). Howard also won the shot put (37-3.5) and took third in the javelin (92-2).
Girls track & field
HOPKINTON 96, Medfield 39: Loren Canty and Josie Hopkins each captured two individual victories and a realy title Friday. Canty was first in the 200-meter dash and shot put, while Hopkins won the 400 and triple jump. They also ran on a winning 4x100 relay with Savannah Rivera and Alice Brambat. Hopkinton's Emma Prisco was first in the 400 and 100. Steph Johnson added an 800 victory and contributed to the winning 4x4 relay with Alina Zhu, Amanda Gooley and Isabel Walker.
WELLESLEY 86, Milton 50: Annie Comella won the long jump at 18 feet, 11 inches, the 200 (26.3) and 100 (12.4) on Friday.
