Projo's All-State Athletes: Here are the best winter high school athletes in RI

2023 Providence Journal All-State Boys Hockey First Team

Ryan Barlow, Warwick

Junior, Forward

Hockey was back in Warwick in a big way last winter and Barlow’s play was a huge part of the resurgence. Barlow, from the Pilgrim side of the city’s co-op team, took a monumental leap this season and finished second in D-I with 15 goals and tied for fourth in points with 24 as the Militia battled to the semifinals before falling to Hendricken.

Will Cavanagh, Hendricken

Junior, Forward

There were ups and downs in the Hawks’ season, but Cavanagh was a constant. His production up front was instrumental in Hendricken finding its feet in January and then winning its third straight state championship. Cavanagh led Division I in assists with 16, was first in points with 30 and was fifth in goals with 14.

Griffin Crain, Hendricken

Junior, Forward

Crain moved all over the Hawks’ lineup last winter before finding a home as a winger and it’s no surprise once he cemented his spot, the team took off. Crain — who as a sophomore verbally committed to play baseball at Louisville — was a steady source of offense and finished tied for second in D-I in goals with 15 and was third in points with 26.

Marc Frateschi, La Salle

Defense, Senior

No team in the state played better defensively than the Rams last winter and Frateschi’s presence in the back was a big reason why. The senior was a physical presence and was smart with his stick, but his ability to read the situation and make plays before they happened was key to La Salle giving up only 23 goals during the regular season.

Jacob Lopes, Cumberland

Defense, Senior

The Clippers have gone from a D-II powerhouse to contending for state titles and Lopes’ play this season was certainly a reason why. Cumberland had a potent offense, but Lopes kept things calm at the defensive end and his play was key in the team’s quarterfinal series comeback win vs. Prout before the season ended at the hands of La Salle in the semifinals.

Braxton Bragg, Warwick

Goaltender, Junior

Bragg helped make a good team great with his play in net and nearly got the Militia to the state title game. While his .924 save percentage was second among D-I starters, no player in RI turned away more high-percentage shots than Bragg. His final game was a masterpiece as Bragg made 27 saves in a 2-1 semifinal loss to the eventual state champs.
