Masters favorites 2024: How to pick, predict winner at Augusta National this week

How do you bet on the 2024 Masters?

Know the best bets and odds and educate yourself. Know that a Masters favorite hasn’t won the event since Tiger Woods in 2005. Astoundingly, Rory McIlroy has been a favorite or co-favorite in seven of the past 10 Masters and never won.

Scottie Scheffler, who is the biggest betting favorite (+400) in the Masters since the height of the Woods era, would still be a solid choice this week. He’s the world No. 1 with two wins this season and leads practically every ball-striking PGA Tour statistic. But be careful.

Don’t overthink the equation by picking someone on a hunch, either. You might like Patrick Cantlay because he was the United States’ sassiest player in the 2023 Ryder Cup and is No. 7 in the world rankings. But Cantlay is No. 125 on the PGA Tour in scoring average this season.

Here’s a look at the 2024 Masters favorites, favorites history, odds and best bets.

Who will win Masters 2024?

These tactics can help whittle down who will win the 2024 Masters.

Identify injured players at 2024 Masters

Don’t just blindly pick someone. Min Woo Lee, 25, is considered an up-and-comer capable of winning a major soon. He finished in the top 5 at the 2023 U.S. Open and tied for 14th in his Masters debut in 2022. But he’s playing the Masters with a broken finger and is No. 109 on the PGA Tour in scoring average this year.

Know average age of Masters winners

Six of the past 10 Masters winners won at 29 years old or younger. Eight of the past 10 were 35 years old or younger. The average age for a Masters winner all-time is 32. So don’t pick a spring chicken — rookies don’t know Augusta National that well — and don’t pick an older veteran who can’t handle the marathon.

Find the best ball-strikers at 2024 Masters

The average Masters champion hits 68% of greens through four rounds, so don’t pick someone who struggles to hit greens in regulation. These statistics are the best indicator of scoring. Despite being a below average putter, Scheffler’s enjoying a great run because he leads the PGA Tour in GIRs and other ball-striking categories. Tony Finau (170-175 yards), Cameron Young (200-plus yards), Will Zalatoris (under 125 yards), Xander Schauffele (GIRs from fairway), Sam Burns (175-200 yards) and Shane Lowry (125-150 yards) are other GIR leaders from various yardages. Lowry also leads the PGA Tour in accuracy from the rough. Many more Masters contenders are in these categories, so do some research.

Do right-handed players better at Masters?

This is an annual debate, but right-handed players who draw the ball figure to have better chances in the Masters. The average winner is right-handed, and 11 of 18 holes at Augusta National dogleg from right-to-left off the tee, which favors a draw over a fade. However, lefties Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson have won multiple Masters, and Watson favors a fade. Dustin Johnson, another fade hitter, won in 2020.

Identify who are the top drivers at Masters

Masters winners drive the ball a mile, which is not shocking, but it helps shrink the pool of potential champions. Sixteen of the past 21 Masters winners averaged 295 yards or more off the tee during the season they won, and nearly half (10) averaged 300 yards or more. Don’t pick a short hitter.

Do with this what you will, but 59% of all Masters winners are from the United States. Maybe pick an American if you need a tiebreaker.
