Mamaroneck freshman, Scarsdale sophomore lead Westchester/Putnam skiing all-stars; see the team

A week and multiple races later, Hammy Hadden was wearing a cast.

And not a small one. One that went from his hand halfway up his arm.

Yes, it turned out the thumb he injured on a gate during his first of four runs at the state championships was broken.

Of course, that didn't stop the Mamaroneck freshman from not only completing all four runs but from winning an eighth-place medal in giant slalom immediately after his injury and a fifth-place medal in slalom the following day.

Hammy Hadden, a Mamaroneck freshman, who was the Section1 boys skimeister and went on to medal at the state championships, is the Journal News/lohud Westchester/Putnam Boys Skier of the Year April 18, 2024.

Nor did it stop him from going on to finish in the upper half of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's U16 Vermont state championship days later against primarily kids who ski fulltime for Vermont ski schools.

Hadden, who was eligible for the competition because he skis on the Bromley (Vermont) Mountain club team, got his diagnosis and cast after the competition.

So call Hadden a gamer.

Unfortunately for Section 1, which finished second as a section at the state championships, and especially for Mamaroneck's ski team, Hadden, who also plays soccer and baseball, will attend a New Hampshire boarding school next year, where he'll ski and play his other sports.

The competititon will be tougher, which is to Hadden's liking.

But The Journal News/lohud Boys Westchester/Putnam Skier of the Year will still miss skiing with his current school.

Hadden, who won the much-sought-after boys skimeister crown at the Section 1 championships for having the lowest combined time of two slalom and two giant slalom runs, enjoyed, perhaps more than anything else, the social aspect of skiing for the Tigers.

"I was able to ski with pretty close buddies. I (also have) made a lot of friends in Vermont. But it was mostly local. I thought it was a fun activity after school," Hadden said.

Van Arsdale girls top Westchester/Putnam skier

This, indeed, was the year when youth ruled Westchester/Putnam skiing.

The Journal News/lohud Girls Westchester/Putnam Skier of the Year is a sophomore, Scarsdale's Stella Van Arsdale.

Van Arsdale, who is also a Bromley Mountain skier, earned a bronze medal at the Section 1 championships in girls GS.

But she was even better at states, where, like Hadden, she earned two medals.

In fact, she was the only female skier from Section 1 to medal.

With medals going to the top 10 skiers in fields of more than 60, she was 10th in GS and ninth in slalom at states, which were skied over two days at Whiteface.

Van Arsdale, who also plays club and high school soccer, in adition to doing outside skiing, didn't join the school skiing team until this year, noting she was a "little intimidated by the time commitment to skiing."

But after playing varsity soccer for Scarsdale last fall as a center midfielder, she cut back on her outside skiing and joined the Scarsdale squad.

She wasted no time in making a strong impression, winning her first race.

But it was more than wins that Van Arsdale got out of skiing for the Raiders.

"I thought skiing for the team was really fun. … It think I got a lot more (out of it than I thought I would). I made a bunch of new friends," she said, with some coming from outside her own team.

The rest of the girls first team

Brynn Anthony, So., Fox Lane Anthony had the top two combined giant slalom runs at the Section 1 championships and was fifth in single-best slalom and single-best giant slalom runs combined. At the state championships, she placed 17th in slalom and 18th in giant slalom out of more than 60 skiers.

Alyssa Lundberg, Sr., Nyack Now Rockland County's five-time Girls Skier of the Year, Lundberg won the vaunted Section 1 girls skimeister crown as the top girls skier at sectionals. She was also 19th at states in slalom and 26th in GS.

Fotini Schattman, So., Hen Hud — While finishing in the upper half (31st) in giant slalom, the state championships were somewhat of a disappointment for Schattman. But the youngster was one of the stars of the Section 1 championships and gave notice she'll be a big contender going forward. She finished second in the skimeister competition, third in slalom, fourth in GS and fourth for top combined single slalom and GS runs. She and her sisters, Eleni and Yorgi (her twin), combined to win the girls team competition for Hen Hud, earning a spot as a team at states.

Yorgia Schattman, So., Hen Hud — A year after tearing her quad in two places, Schattman combined with her older sister, Eleni, and twin sister, Fotina, to win the Section 1 girls team title for Hen Hud. She was a solid 20th at states in giant slalom after very strong showings at sectionals. There she was fourth in skimeister, fourth in slalom, fifth in GS and sixth in combined individual top slalom and GS runs.

Girls Coach of the Year

Nicole Rasulo, Hen Hud Rasulo must already be excited about next year after Hen Hud won the girls Section 1 team skiing title with the Schattman sisters. All three talented skiers should be back next year and, if they can repeat as team champion, will have experience on their side as they try to better their sixth-place team performance at states.

The rest of the boys first team

Porter Bysshe, Fr., John Jay-Cross River Bysshe helped the combined John Jay-CR/North Salem/Somers squad to an upset win for the Section 1 boys ski title. He won gold in slalom at the section championships and was third in combined best single slalom and single giant slalom time. At the state championships, he finished in the upper third in giant slalom with a 19th-place finish.

Justin Gray, Sr., Rye — After finishing second in the Section 1 boys skimeister competition for lowest combined time of two slalom and two giant slalom runs, Gray finished 13th out of more than 60 skiers in slalom at the state championships. He also finished in the upper half in giant slalom.

Harrison Gredick, Fr., Irvington — After failing to finish his second slalom run at the Section 1 championships but finishing fifth in giant slalom and fifth in combined single slalom plus single GS runs at sectionals, the youngster grabbed the last medal spot at the state skiing championships, finishing 10th in slalom.

Sean O'Meara, So., John Jay-Cross River — O'Meara, who was fifth in boys slalom at the Section 1 skiing championships, captured a ninth-place medal in slalom at the state championships. That finish helped his John Jay-Cross River/North Salem/Somers squad wins bronze in the boys team competition at states.

Boys Coach of the Year

Dan Collea, John Jay-Cross River/North Salem/Somers: Collea's team suffered what seemed like a huge loss when one of its top skiers went down with a season-ending injury a couple of weeks before the Section 1 championships. But the team pulled off an upset with its top three finishers during sectionals combining to win the boys ski title to earn a trip to states. There, Collea guided his squad to a bronze medal in the eight-team state boys ski competition.
