LSU loses All-America cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. indefinitely after foot procedure
LSU will be without All-America cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. for the foreseeable future.
Stingley is out indefinitely following a procedure on his injured foot, coach Ed Orgeron announced Wednesday. He initially injured the foot during preseason practicesand reaggravated the injury prior to the game against Mississippi State on Sept. 25.
“I appreciate all of the support from LSU and the fans,” Stingley Jr. said in in a statement. “I’m doing all that I can to return to the field as soon as possible. I want to finish out the season with my teammates and I will do everything I can to get healthy so that I will be able to play again this year.”
No timetable has been set for Stingley's return to the Tigers.
“It’s one of these injuries that was nagging and obviously went to the doctor and had it taken care of,” Orgeron said. “When don’t know when he will be back or if he will be back.
“Obviously if he can be back, we’ll be happy and if not, we’ll have to carry on.”

Stingley emerged as a start during his true freshman season. He started every game as LSU went 15-0 and won the 2019 national championship. A leg injury limited Stingley to seven starts in 2020.
Orgeron is confident Stingley will play again this season if healthy, despite the junior being projected as a top pick in the NFL draft next year.
“Knowing Derek and talking to him, he wants to come back to this team, but obviously that’s a decision a family has to make," Orgeron said.
Dwight McGlothern has started the past two games opposite Eli Ricks at cornerback. Darren Evans and Raydarious Jones have also seen their snaps increase at the position. Safety Jay Ward has also played cornerback in the past.
Orgeron announced that safety Major Burns, a Georgia transfer, will not play Saturday at No. 14 Kentucky.
“Eli Ricks, Dwight, Radarius Jones are gonna have to play a little bit,” Orgeron said. “That’s what we have and If we have to, we don’t want to do that, but in an emergency we can move Jay Ward there.”
