Pachuca − the Liga MX champion with the most combined points accumulated across the Clausura and Apertura seasons in the 2022 calendar year − also earned a bye for the group stage and will enter the competition during the knockout stage.

FC Juárez, meanwhile, finished second in Group H behind Liga MX rival Mazatlán to secure its date in Los Angeles with one of Major League Soccer's premier teams.

FC Juárez currently sits in third place in the Apertura 2023 standings behind Chivas Guadalajara and CF Monterrey after three games played.

LAFC scores first goal in unconventional manner

A corner kick resulted in a hilarious goal for LAFC.

Carlos Vela's kick bounced out to Kellyn Acosta on the fringes of the 18-yard box. Acosta took a shot at goal, but the ball bounced off the back of teammate Ryan Hollingshead and into the back of the net.

Carlos Vela puts LAFC up 2-0

Carlos Vela, the 2019 MLS MVP, was up to his old tricks against FC Juárez.

FC Juárez Ramón Pasquel couldn't clear a deflected shot off the boot of LAFC's Mateusz Bogusz and got caught out of the goalmouth. The ball serendipitously bounced toward Vela, who cleverly chipped the ball over Pasquel and into the goal.
