Jalen Hurts finger: Ex-Alabama QB suffers ugly injury to hand in Eagles-Giants game

Jalen Hurts' right hand has helped transform him into one of the best and most well-compensated quarterbacks in the NFL.

On Sunday, though, it drew attention for all the wrong reasons.

With his Philadelphia Eagles team trying to recover from a late-season slump and fight for playoff seeding in the last week of the 2023 NFL regular season, Hurts’ middle finger on his right hand was bent into an unusual and uncomfortable-looking position early in the second quarter of the Eagles’ game against the New York Giants.

The former Alabama standout had injured his hand when it came into contact with the right hand of charging Giants inside linebacker Bobby Okereke on Hurts’ follow-through. After the game, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said "we'll see" regarding Hurts' status for Philadelphia's playoff game against Tampa Bay, although NFL Network's Mike Garafolo said it sounds like he's expected to be ready.

Jalen Hurts finger injury update

After returning to the Philadelphia sideline, Hurts had his finger taped and was seen gripping and throwing the ball. However, he did not return.

According to Mike Garafolo from the NFL Network, Sirianni acted like he expects Hurts to be ready to go for the Eagles' first-round playoff game against the Buccaneers, although Sirianni said "we'll see" when asked about Hurts' status.

A first-team all-SEC selection at Alabama, Hurts was a second-team All-Pro in 2022 with the Eagles, who he helped lead to an appearance in Super Bowl LVII.

Jalen Hurts stats

Heading into Sunday's matchup with the Giants, Hurts had completed 66.1% of his passes for 3,803 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while adding 601 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.

While some of his statistics like passing yards are higher than they were last season, he has been less efficient and more turnover-prone. In 2022, Hurts competed 66.5% of his passes for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions adding 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
