Iowa hoops offers top-ranked 2024 Colorado prospect

The Iowa Hawkeyes went into Colorado and offered one of the Centennial State’s finest.

Four-star small forward Darrion Sutton of Accelerated Prep in Lakewood, Colorado, just outside of Denver reported an offer from Matt Gatens and the Iowa Hawkeyes on May 25. He is the top-ranked recruit from the state of Colorado according to both ESPN and 247Sports.

ESPN ranks Sutton as the nation’s No. 36 small forward and as a four-star recruit in the 2024 class. Meanwhile, 247Sports rates Sutton as a three-star prospect and as the country’s No. 34 small forward in the 2024 cycle. Lastly, Rivals lists Sutton as a three-star talent.

In addition to Iowa, 247Sports reports that Sutton also holds Power 6 offers from Cincinnati, Creighton, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Michigan, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Rutgers, St. John’s and Virginia Tech.

Sutton also has offers from Akron, DePaul, Fresno State, Illinois-Chicago, Indiana State, Long Island, Louisiana Tech, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Tennessee State, Toledo, Towson, UT-Arlington, Valpariso and Wyoming.

Coach Frank of BigShots.net recently offered up this breakdown of Sutton’s game on Twitter.

Coach Frank wrote the following of Sutton.

Darrion is a four-star wing who has seen his stock skyrocket in the past couple of weeks. Amazingly agile and shifty given his lengthy frame, he demonstrates excellent ball handling skills.

Darrion is very good shooting off the dribble and is a threat from anywhere on the floor. His footwork is textbook, his left-handed stroke is sound and silky smooth. He uses hang dribbles and jabs effectively followed either by getting into the jumper or bursting to the rim with long strides, shiftiness, good quickness and body control. — Coach Frank, BigShots.net.

He also came away impressed with Sutton’s ability off the bounce and his defensive upside with his length and wingspan.

A very good handle featuring crossovers, between the legs dribbles, hang dribbles and timely hesitations. As you could expect given his length, he finishes above the rim, but he’s also an explosive leaper, quick off his feet.

Darrion has a great touch on non-dunk finishes and demonstrates skillful footwork attacking the rim. He uses the pro hop and stays on balance. He has a long wingspan allowing him to rebound at a high level and block shots but also, along with skillful footwork and athleticism is able to defend multiple positions, tip passes and get steals off the ball in passing lanes. — Coach Frank, BigShots.net.
