Ida baseball sweeps Whiteford; Monroe softball takes two from Rams

OTTAWA LAKE – Owen Snyder didn’t waste any pitches Saturday.

The Ida sophomore needed just 68 pitches to shut out Whiteford 1-0. He gave up just five hits and did not walk a batter.

“Owen Snyder was surgical,” Ida coach Jimm McMonagle said.

Josh Johnson went 1-for-2 and drove in Noah Adkins with the only run of the game in the second inning.

Whiteford’s Logan Keane yielded just three hits and went the distance in a tough loss.

Ida also won the first game of the doubleheader 4-3 as Dean Thomas went 2-for-3 and Jaxon Millican pitched well.

Tre Eitniear racked up 11 strikeouts for Whiteford.

Ida has recovered from a rocky start to push its record to 12-6.

“We are playing pretty good baseball these last couple of weeks,” McMonagle said. “We are starting to get things clicking. Both teams played really clean baseball today.”

Hunter Hemelgarn went 4-for-5 and was the winning pitcher in the first game as Ida’s junior varsity pulled off a 9-2, 9-6 sweep. Hazin Vogt had a key two-run double in the second.

PREP BASEBALL

Richards leads Monroe

NEWPORT – Breylon Richards went 3-for-4 with a double to lead Monroe to a 14-1 win over Jefferson Saturday.

Bryce Lechner had a two-run single in the seventh inning when the Trojans scored six times to break the game open. Brady Welch earned the win. Welch, Asher Simmons and Carson Liedel had multi-hit games.

Monroe coach Chris Clark called it his team’s, “Best game in a long time. Pitchers did their jobs. We had hits with guys on base. Things we have not done in recent games.”

SMCC more ‘complete’

HUDSON – St. Mary Catholic Central got solid pitching Saturday in a 7-3, 6-2 sweep of Hudson.

Brady Decator went the distance in the opener and logged nine strikeouts. Ryan Hayden and Drew Bylow combined for 10 whiffs in the second game.

Riley Sommer collected two hits, and Anthony Caladino drove in two runs in the first game. Jaden Paquette and Brady Decator each had a pair of hits in the second.

“These were the two most complete games of baseball we have played all year,” SMCC coach Jared Janssen said. “We hope to continue to build on this.”

Dundee falls twice

WILLIS – Dundee (10-7) suffered a pair of losses Saturday in the Ypsilanti Lincoln Invitational.

Tecumseh racked up 14 hits to take the first game 10-6. Evan Bennett went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the offense. Cooper Buhl added two hits.

Riverview scored a pair of early runs and nipped the Vikings 2-1 in the second game. Joey Brink and Quintin Lephew notched three hits apiece.

Erie Mason surging

ERIE – Erie Mason pushed its record to 8-10 by sweeping Dearborn Fordson 17-4 and 24-9 Saturday.

“We’re definitely playing better baseball,” Mason coach Blain Moore said.

Xavier Wise was the ringleader with five hits and four RBIs. Phoenix Stefko, Maddix Wise, TJ Langenderfer, Anderson Moore, Collin Brooks and Carson Ellerbrock also had multi-hit games.

Bulldogs lose rematch

KALAMAZOO – Summerfield made a long trip Friday to play the team it lost to in the regional finals last season, falling 10-3 to Kalamazoo Hackett.

Defense cost the Vikings. Hackett scored eight unearned runs, including six in the fourth inning.

Reece Kalb doubled for the 5-9 Bulldogs.

PREP SOFTBALL

Four hits for Haefler

MONROE – Alexa Haefler went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs as Monroe nipped Flat Rock 8-7 in the back end of a doubleheader Saturday.

Alana Aulph went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Monroe to a 5-1 win in the first game.

Zaylee Richard was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in the second game.

Avery Collett an Olivia McMahon picked up the pitching wins and Avery Leach, Ava Proffitt and Alyssa Sroka made key offensive contributions for the 9-10 Trojans.

Jefferson adds to Ring

NEWPORT – Jefferson added Tanya Potcova and Janea Castiglione to its Ring of Honor Saturday night and celebrated with an 11-3 win over Erie Mason.

Julia Perry tossed a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts while Lindsey Gennoe and Brooke Payment led the offense with three hits each.

Kensey Kreger and Zoie Stubleski had hits for Mason.

Dundee clips Hemlock

GRASS LAKE – Lauren Doane pitched a strong game and Shay VanZandt homered to break a tie in the seventh inning as Dundee tripped Hemlock 3-1 Saturday.

Dundee tacked on an insurance run after VanZandt’s homer when Kaylee Imo doubled, then pinch runner Ella Rath stole third and scored on an error.

The Vikings lost their first game 14-0 to Grass Lake.

Avery Ball, Kennedy Irwin and Kiernan Brown were other offensive leaders for the day.

PREP LACROSSE

Bedford wins twice

TEMPERANCE – Blake Dlugosielski scored seven goals and Brady Weirich added five goals and five assists as Bedford beat Grosse Ile 16-11 Monday and Ann Arbor Skyline 12-9 Wednesday.

FRESHMAN BASEBALL

Sparks sparks Bedford

TEMPERANCE – Landon Sparks rang up four hits and drove in five runs as Bedford swept Bowling Green 11-0 and 3-2 Saturday.
