High Desert Sports Roundup: Adelanto begins Desert Sky League play with victory over Barstow

The Adelanto boys basketball team appears poised to repeat as Desert Sky League champions following a dominant 92-60 victory over Barstow on Tuesday night.

After running the table last season, the Saints picked up their ninth straight victory in DSL play by beating the Aztecs in the league opener at home.

The Saints jumped out to a 27-14 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the lead increased to 22 points at halftime.

Komari Lewis led the way for the Saints, scoring a game-high 22 points, while Kimo Brown Jr. followed right behind at 10 points.

Five total Adelanto players reached double figures in scoring as Joshua Mayers added 13 points with 10 rebounds, O’Shaun Rodriguez scored 11 points and Morgan Davis ended with 10 points.

For Barstow, Quesey Gaoa led the way with 17 points, while Benjamin Mongentmy added 15 points.

Barstow (6-10, 0-1 DSL) is on the road again Thursday night against Victor Valley, while Adelanto (13-4, 1-0 DSL) begins tournament action on Friday and Saturday against AGBU and St. Bonaventure.

Prep Girls Basketball

Silverado 82, Granite Hills 20

At Apple Valley, the Hawks jumped out to a 27-point lead and then held Granite Hills scoreless in the second quarter for a 46-6 lead at the half in the Desert Sky League opener.

Elizabeth Udeze led the way for Silverado with 25 points, Aubrey Rumford added 11 points, while Song Field and Belinda Rincon both scored nine points.

The Hawks (11-5, 1-0 DSL) are off until Jan. 9, when they host Adelanto

Prep Boys Soccer

Granite Hills 2, Silverado 1

At Victorville, Nathan Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lift the Cougars past the Hawks in the Desert Sky League opener on Jan. 2.

Rodriguez scored his goal off a corner kick after Silverado drew a red card in the final minutes of the game.

Thane Harding put Granite Hills on the board in the 25th minute, scoring on an assist from Axel Jimenez.

The Cougars (3-4-5, 1-0 DSL) are back in action Thursday at home against Adelanto.

Adelanto 3, Barstow 1

At Adelanto, Julian Valdez scored a hat trick to lead the way for the Saints in the Desert Sky League opener on Jan. 2.

Adelanto led 1-0 at halftime, and then got two more goals in the second half. Ishmael Baez assisted on two goals, and Rodrigo Orozco on one, while Ivan Gil recorded four saves in goal.

Adelanto (8-11-1, 1-0 DSL) is back in action Thursday at Granite Hills.

Granite Hills 10, Silverado 2

At Apple Valley, the Cougars kicked off Desert Sky League action on Jan. 2 in a big way as Liana Tsabur scored four goals to lead the way.

Granite Hills scored four goals in the first half and then added a barrage of six goals in the second half. Marisah Nolan added two goals with three assists; Kayla Johnson scored two goals with an assist; Layla Lobato scored a goal with two assists; Amy Mejorado added a goal; and Daijah Reymond, Julia Alvarado and Kyndra Heffin each had an assist.

Granite Hills (8-5-1, 1-0 DSL) is back in action Thursday on the road against Adelanto.

Barstow 3, Adelanto 0

At Barstow, Briana Vidales scored two goals with an assist to help lead the Aztecs in the Desert Sky League opener against the Saints on Jan. 2.

Nayeli Carranza scored a goal and also assisted on one of Vidales’ goals, while goalkeeper Chloe Bledsoe recorded eight saves in the clean sheet.

Barstow (7-5-1, 1-0 DSL) is back in action Thursday at home against Victor Valley.

Nine area wrestlers claim titles at first-ever Goforth and Conquer

At Adelanto, Sultana took first place as a team at the first-ever Goforth and Conquer tournament, hosted by Adelanto High School on Dec. 27.

Sultana had three girls capture titles, as nine of the winners came from High Desert schools.

Nataly Diaz took first place at 115 pounds for the Sultans by pinning Pacifica's Alysia Clayton at the 1:44 mark; Gabriella Belanger pinned Oak Hills' Kaylin Steede at the 1:29 mark for the 138-pound title; and Chelsea Garcia pinned Granite Hills' Chloe Navarrete in 53 seconds at 190 pounds.

Hesperia took third place as a team at 97 points, while Victor Valley finished right behind in fourth place at 78 points. Arianna Estrella was Hesperia’s lone title winner, as she won four matches in the 120-pound division.

Both Barstow and Oak Hills had two girls capture titles.

For Barstow, Ariyanna Avalos pinned Sultana's Makayla Anderson at the 1:40 mark in the 130-pound title match, and Mariah Rodriguez took first place at 170 pounds by pinning Pacifica’s Samya Bazile at 3:28.

For Oak Hills, Samera Mejia scored a 6-4 decision over Sultana's Dayanara Ramirez for the 125-pound title, and at 140 pounds, Amy Garcia pinned Victor Valley's Jocelin Gonzalez at the 1:10 mark.

Apple Valley’s Jaelynn Serna took the 100-pound title by scoring a 12-5 decision over Hesperia's Cecilia Villanueva.

Sultana takes 2nd at Lakeside Holiday Classic

At Lake Elsinore, Rocky and Cael Humphrey both took first place in their weight classes at the Lakeside Holiday Classic on Dec. 21.

The brothers helped Sultana to finish second overall as a team with 221.5 points.

Cael Humphrey captured the 113-pound title by pinning Canyon Springs’ Isaac Castaneda at the 1:48 mark. Cael Humprhey racked up five victories by pinfall in the two-day tournament.

At 120 pounds, Rocky Humphrey scored a 9-7 decision over Rylan Madrid, of Centennial, for the title. Rocky Humphrey won three other matches by pinfall and one by majority decision.

Ryan Collins placed second at 144 pounds for the Sultans; Denzel Cisneros (132 pounds) and Xander Firm (285) both captured third place in their weight classes; Noah Villatoro (138) and Jacob Gunn (150) both placed fifth; Raymond Zuniga (106) took sixth place; and Jonathon Gomez (138) finished in seventh place.

Serrano’s Ochoa takes heavyweight title at Blackwatch 2023

At Upland, Marcus Ochoa scored an 8-4 decision over Romario Bonilla, of Perris, in the heavyweight title match at the Blackwatch 2023 tournament on Dec. 28.

Ochoa made a run to the title match by winning five other matches by pinfall.
