Skubal sets tone: Detroit Tigers are off to best start in a decade. Once again, it's an ace leading them.

Game notes: The Tigers have won three straight series to get off to their best start in April in a decade. Kenta Maeda is back on the bump after his best start in a Tigers uniform last outing against the Tampa Bay Rays.

In his last start, Maeda threw five scoreless innings with five strikeouts against the Rays while giving up just three hits. It was the first time Maeda made it through a start unscathed in his first five opportunities in a Tigers uniform.

The Tigers are coming off a 4-1 win over the Royals on Sunday to take the three-game at Comerica Park during NFL draft weekend. Rookie Wenceel Pérez hit a two-run home run and Jake Rogers provided the final insurance with his second homer of the season to reach four runs, which was more than enough to support Tarik Skubal during another dominant outing from the team's ace.

Tigers right fielder Wenceel Perez hits a single in the fifth inning of the Tigers' 4-1 win on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Comerica Park.

The Cardinals came out of the gates slow, but enter the series in Detroit winners of their last two series against the Mets and Diamondbacks. Matz is on the mound for the Cardinals and has struggled in his last two starts, giving up seven runs in 4⅓ innings against Arizona and five runs in five innings against the Athletics.
