Couple top-ranked powerhouses in action for Week 2 of Section 4 football

Two predictably top-ranked teams will be in action at home for Week 2 of Section 4 football.

Maine-Endwell has been labeled No. 1 in Class B in the New York State Sports Writers Association’s initial tabulation, with Tioga Central tops in Class D. Each is in search of a third consecutive state championship.

Have a look at how the schedule shapes up.

Horseheads at Syracuse Corcoran, 6 p.m. Friday

Corcoran High of Syracuse seeks to become the first 2023 opponent to keep Horseheads’ scoring to a manageable total. The Blue Raiders, ranked 15th in Class A, have scored 56 points in each of two victories. Corcoran began its season with a 53-8 roll past Fulton.

Elmira at Baldwinsville, 6:30 p.m. Friday

The Express was tagged with an official 14-8 loss against Liverpool despite the teams playing just over a quarter when lightning arrived. Chenango Forks vs Watkins Glen/O-M (at WG), 7 p.m. Friday

Uncommon have been 0-1 records attached to Chenango Forks football teams, but that’ll be the record attached to the Blue Devils as they make the trek to Watkins Glen.

Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour opened with a 12-6 loss to a highly-regarded S-VE/Candor squad and came back with a 26-15 win against Lansing that required comeback from a 15-0 hole and brought the Storm's Bradley Gillis 109 yards on 10 rushes.

Harpursville/Afton at Tioga, 7 p.m. Friday

Tioga Central brings a 29-game win streak into the game against Harpursville/Afton, the Tigers’ debut on the new synthetic turf on Haggerty Field.

Tioga comes off a scintillating 23-17 overtime victory against Waverly in which quarterback Caden Bellis rushed 14 yards for the decisive points in a game halted by lightning Friday night and resumed Saturday at Waverly Memorial Stadium.

A three-game grind of a welcome to 2023 continues for the Hawks with a Sept. 22 contest at home against Maine-Endwell.

Owego at Maine-Endwell, 2 p.m. Saturday

The win streak stands at 23 for Maine-Endwell’s seven-time state champions, who eased into the season with a 62-12 win against Chenango Valley. Owego started by defeating Newark Valley, 34-14, on the Cardinals’ field.
