CIF-SS Baseball Playoffs: Riverside Prep and Adelanto move on to the quarterfinals

An 11-day layoff didn’t seem to phase the Riverside Prep baseball team much in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

The Silver Knights returned to action in a big way, as six strong innings on the mound and a pair of run-scoring triples from Cayden Johnson led the way to a 5-3 victory over Segerstrom. Riverside Prep (22-6) drew a first-round bye and last competed on April 26.

Tuesday afternoon, Johnson quickly found himself down 1-0 after allowing a run-scoring single in the top of the first inning.

He quickly made up for it as he laced his first triple of the day to score Andrew Logsdon and tie the game.

Segerstrom sent the potential game-tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning after a pair of walks, but a ground out to first base stranded the runners and ended the game. Thomas Salazar recorded the save with an inning of relief.

Johnson picked up the win as he allowed two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over six innings.

Here’s a look at how the rest of the local baseball teams fared in the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs:

Adelanto 5, Trinity Classical Academy 3

At Valencia, a four-run fourth inning proved to be enough for the Saints in the second round of the Division 5 playoffs.

Adelanto took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Daniel Fernandez scored from third base on a wild pitch. Fernandez laced a double and then advanced to third base on a single from Candelaria.

Fernandez gave the Saints a 3-0 lead after smacking a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Adelanto tacked on two more runs in the inning for a 5-0 lead.

Trinity Classical Academy scored two runs in the sixth inning and trailed by three runs entering the seventh.

Starting pitcher Zachary Viramontes went out for the complete game but quickly allowed a single and a double. Adelanto called on ace Chris Epsinoza for the save and he gave up a run-scoring single that made it a two-run game with no outs with runners on first and second base.

Three pitches later, Josiah Saroughian grounded the ball to Viramontes at third base, who fired home and eventually got John Carlson out. Quinn Minyard attempted to advance to third base on the play but was tagged out for an unconventional double play.

Espinoza struck out the next batter to end the game and send the Saints to the quarterfinals.

Adelanto (21-9) will be home Friday afternoon for the quarterfinals against Santa Monica or Ganesha.

Oxford Academy 1, Silverado 0

At Cypress, the season came to an end for the Hawks in the second round of the Division 7 playoffs on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The teams were scoreless entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Silverado’s Nicholas Padilla allowed two singles and then a bunt to load up the bases.

With no outs, Padilla quickly worked a 0-and-2 count with Sorataro Suzuki at the plate. But three straight balls loaded the count, followed by a foul ball and then ball four to bring in the game-winning run.

Silverado’s lone hit came in the sixth inning, a leadoff single from Uriel Martin, who also drew a walk in the third inning.

Brandon Chavez started for the Hawks and allowed three hits over three innings with three strikeouts. Padilla allowed three hits and struck out four batters over three innings.

Oxford Academy will take on either Chaffey or Jurupa Valley in the quarterfinals Friday.

Azusa 15, Academy of Careers & Exploration 1

At Azusa, the Eagles couldn’t generate much offense and saw their season end in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 8 playoffs.

ACE scored a run in the second inning when Silas Urtiaga scored on an error from the catcher.

Azusa struck for five runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 6-1 lead.

Azusa advances to the quarterfinals on Friday to take on either California Lutheran or Santa Clarita Christian.
