Chargers fire former Rams DC Brandon Staley after 63-21 loss to Raiders
Brandon Staley left his role as the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator after just one season in 2020, becoming the Chargers’ head coach for the start of the 2021 campaign. His tenure with the Chargers didn’t even last three full seasons, however.
The Chargers announced on Friday that Staley has been fired, as has general manager Tom Telesco. The news comes after the Chargers’ disastrous 63-21 loss to the Raiders on Thursday night, Staley’s 48th regular-season game with the team.
He went 24-24 in the regular season and 0-1 in the playoffs.

When Staley was with the Rams in 2020, Los Angeles had the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL, allowing the fewest yards and points in the league. With the Chargers, however, the team has never ranked better than 20th in either category, currently sitting 29th in yards per game allowed this year.
Staley is unlikely to get another head coaching job soon after a rough tenure with the Chargers, but perhaps he could land somewhere as a positional coach or defensive coordinator again in 2023.
