Somerset Berkley track and field all-star has a day at states: Top performers (May 20-25)

NORTH ANDOVER — It was another impressive performance for Camden Rose.

The Somerset Berkley track and field star took it to another level during Saturday's Division 3 state meet at Merrimack College. Rose took first in the 400 with a time of 49.06.

He also placed third in the 200 and seventh place in the 100.

Boys Outdoor Track

Case

Case had an outstanding showing at the Division 6 state meet. The boys 4x100 relay team of Nathan Wood, Nick Thorpe, Gauossou Traore and Tyler Lamonde placed first with a school record time of 43.70. Christopher Gaboriault took first in the triple jump (45-01). Ben Fortier placed third in the javelin (163-8) and Ben Deady finished seventh in the 110 hurdles (16.31). Thorpe placed 10th in 200 (23.04) and 12th in 400 (52.01).

Diman

The Bengals fared well on Day 2 of the Division 2 championships. Phoenix Bennett was a medalist in the 400 meter, finishing eighth (50.94). Maxwell DesRoches was a medalist in the high jump (5'10) taking eighth. Cashton Richard placed 15th in the 400 hurdles (59.73) and was 14th in javelin (141'9"). Also performing well was Asafe Penha who was 24th in the 100m (11.66).

Girls Outdoor Track

Case

The Cardinals had a solid performances at the Division 6 state meet. Hannah Santos placed third in high jump (5-4).Liberty Gazaille took fourth in shot put (34-3) and Aiyanah Massie finished fourth in long jump (16-10). Gabriella Thorpe came in fifth in 100 with a school record time of 12.90. The 4x100 relay team of Emma Bouchard, Deanna Brightman, Massie and Thorpe set a record, placing fifth (51.72).

Diman

The Diman girls had great performances on Day 2 of the Division 2 championships. Inez Medeiros placed fourth overall in the 100 (12.93) and Grace Flattery placed seventh in the high jump (5'2). The 4x100 relay team of Joleah Rivera, Emma Foley, Flattery and Medeiros placed seventh overall and set a new school record (51.38). Also performing well were the Katie Miranda and Hannah King in the shot put and 4x800 team of Angela Njoroge, Lylah Thibeault, Nicole Mota, and Isabelle Chekares.

Atlantis Charter

Thalys Silva finished second in the triple jump (44’5.75’’), the long jump (22’6.75’’) and finished ninth in the 100 (11.43 seconds) for the Tritons in the Division 6 state meet. Thalys qualifies for the Meet of Champions next week at Fitchburg State. Shawn Kalunga took 19th in the mile out of 37 athletes, finishing with a PR of 4:42.3.

Baseball

Westport 2, Southeastern 0

The Wildcats ended the regular season strong after blanking league opponent Southeastern at home Saturday. Max Gallant pitched into the seventh inning with two outs when his no-hitter was broken up for Westport (12-5). He finished with eight strikeouts. Michael DeGagne drove in Owen Boudria in the 1st inning and Joey Guild drove in Kingston Cordeiro in the sixth to secure the win.

Seekonk 3, Somerset Berkley 2

The Raiders dropped their season finale against Seekonk. Hayden Teasdale led SBR (15-5) with two hits. Liam Meehan, Jayden Cruz, and Camden Hoyle each drove in a run. Will Dionne allowed no earned runs, six hits, walked one while striking out eight.

Softball

Somerset Berkley 8, Milton 2

The Raiders received a big performance from Tatum Swanson in the circle Friday as SBR finished with a win over non-league opponent Milton. Swanson went the distance for the Raiders (14-6), scattering six hits, one earned run, four walks while striking out four. She also had a pair of hits, including a two-run home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Emma Javier led SBR by going 3-for-4, including three doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Julia Costa (RBI, run scored) and Brooke Crombie (double, RBI, run scored) each contributed a pair of hits. Victoria Dematteo (two walks, run scored), Samantha Comeau (triple, walk, run scored) and Makenzie Jacob (two runs scored).

Westport 9, South Shore 4

Makayla Grace pitched a complete game for the Wildcats in a win against South Shore Tech. Grace struck out 11 batters for Westport (8-9). Jayda Pequita went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored three runs. Tess Silvia added a two- run single. Julia George, Layla Bossie, Morgan Pacheco, Molly Costa and Grace each added a single. George and Bossie played well, defensively.

Baseball

Somerset Berkley 3, Middleboro 2

Dante Papaleo pitched nearly five strong innings for the Raiders in their home win over Middleboro. Papaleo allowed three hits, two runs, four walks while striking out one. Ethan Santos collected the save after fanning three batters. Benjamin Jardin led SBR (15-4) with two hits and two runs batted in. Alex Crook also collected two hits. Mason Medeiros stole two bases.

Westport 3, South Shore Tech. 2

Luke Finglas pitched a complete game and fanned nine batters for the Wildcats in their win over South Shore Tech. Connor James and Michael DeGagne hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning. Jack Valton drove in a second run with a triple. Max Gallant hit a go-ahead single to drive in Owen Boudria.

Diman

The Bengals displayed great performances on Day 1 of the Division 2 MIAA state championship at Merrimack College. Diman had three top 10 performances on the day. Emma Foley set a new school record in the triple jump at 35'3", taking home a fifth-place medal. Grace Flattery jumped at 34'9" and secured a sixth-place medal. Inez Medeiros ran a personal-best and new school record in the 200 (26.42) to place ninth. Also performing well for the Bengals for the day was Katie Miranda in discus (71'0).

Thursday

Boys Volleyball

Durfee 3, Taunton 1

The Hilltoppers took three of four games —  27-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-19 — as Durfee came away with a road victory over Taunton High. Danny Matuszek led the way for Durfee (13-7) with 37 assists. Chris Milfort chipped in with 22 kills and Josh Sanon finished with 10 kills. Jo Olubanwo had five kills while Braeden Bartley had 15 digs. Elias DaSilva had 12 digs on the defensive end.

Baseball

Taunton 2, Durfee 1

The Hilltoppers lost a heartbreaker on the road against Taunton. Jayden Souza pitched 6 innings, giving up a run, two hits and three walks. Taunton scored the winning run on a safety squeeze. Cayden Martins got the Durfee's (16-4) offense going with a triple in the fifth and Yandel Pichardo drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Softball

Fairhaven 15, Diman 2

The Bengals lost on the road to Fairhaven. Nadia Ponte went 3-for-3 with five putouts in the game for Diman (11-7).Natalie Raposa had two hits while Danielle Mello, Kacie Lynch and Courtney Boies each had a hit and an RBI.Ashley Carvalho added a hit before being removed from the mound after being hit with a line drive in the ankle.

Somerset Berkley 4, Case 1

Jackson Souza (6-0, 6-0 and Max Petit (6-0, 6-1) each won their singles match for the Raiders in a win over Case. Brayden Dorego and Ian Foulds (6-1, 6-2) won at first doubles while Calvin Perrotty and Sam Trenholme (6-4, 6-0) were winners at second doubles for SBR (14-4). Owen Borges won a singles match for Case (1-16). Petit finish the regular season with an 18-0 record and was 36-0 in sets won. Perrotty completed his regular season at 10-0 and Trenholme won his first varsity match.

Outdoor Track

Case

Christopher Gaboriault won triple jump with a school record jump of 45-1 in Day 1 of the Division 6 state championships. Liberty Gazaille placed third in discus, 103-4.

Softball

Somerset Berkley 7, Durfee 1

The Raiders received a great performance from Victoria Dematteo in the circle as SBR came away with a 7-1 victory over Durfee at Steven Winarski varsity softball field on the campus of B.M.C. Durfee High School. Dematteo went the distance for the Raiders (13-6), allowing just three hits, a walk, an earned run while striking out 10 batters. She also had a pair of hits, scored a run and an RBI. Sydney Bednarz (RBI, run scored) and Makenzie Jacob (RBI, run scored) each had three hits in the win. Julia Costa went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophia Thornton (run scored), Emma Javier (two RBIs, run scored) and Tatum Swanson (sacrifice bunt, RBI) each finished with a hit. Katerina Rumsey led Durfee (5-13) with two hits and a run scored. Niyah Boone also contributed a hit. Kaitlin Coutu was solid in her complete game, allowing only two earned runs and walked four.

Boys Volleyball

Durfee 3, Quincy 0

The Hilltoppers swept all three games — 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16 — on Senior night at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Danny Matuszek had 32 assists while Chris Milfort and Josh Sanon continued their great seasons with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Elias DaSilva and Ethan Horsman were great in the back row.

Boys Tennis

Durfee 3, Diman 2

The Hilltoppers edged neighboring Diman at home. Will Rumsey and Colin Fleet each won a 8-game, pro-set singles match. Xavier Inacio and Kareem Karam won at first doubles for Durfee (11-5).

Durfee 4, Brockton 1

Will Rumsey and Colin Fleet each won their singles match against league opponent Brockton. Timothy Archambault and Xavier Inacio won their first doubles match for Durfee (12-5). Brockton forfeited the second doubles match.

Somerset Berkley 4, Seekonk 1

Jackson Souza (6-2, 6-2) and undefeated Max Petit (6-0, 6-0) each won their singles competition in a win against Seekonk. Brayden Dorego and Ian Foulds (6-2, 6-0) won at first doubles for SBR (13-4). Kelan Langlois and Nate Melo (6-1, 6-2) were winners at second doubles.

Bishop Stang 3, Westport 2

The Wildcats lost a close match against non-league opponent Bishop Stang on the road. Jack Keane won at third singles for Westport (7-6), 6-1, 6-2. Brady Silva and Avery Howell won at second doubles, 6-0, 7-5.

Girls Tennis

Durfee 3, Brockton 2

The Hilltoppers beat league opponent Brockton. Olivia Rumsey, Maggie O’Connell and Brooke Tabicas each collected single wins for Durfee (8-8). Tabicas clinched the team win with a 10-8 tiebreaker in third singles.

Somerset Berkley 4, Westport 1

Kaelyn Jones won her match at first singles for the Wildcats (1-10), 6-0, 6-3 in Somerset Berkley's home win. Taliyah Raiche battled at second singles before losing her match 5-7, 2-6. Abby Forbes almost made a great comeback but ultimately fell at third singles 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 8-10.

Case 4, Westport 0

The Cardinals received a big performance from senior Jack Orton in their shutout win over Westport in the season finale. Orton went 4 ⅔ innings for Case (10-10), allowing just a hit, no runs while striking out seven batters. Reid Ulmschneider collected the save in relief after going 2 ⅓ while giving up a hit, no runs and a strikeout. Adam Gracie went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, a run scored and two stolen bases. Zach Kern collected a pair of hits, including a double and a run scored. Will LeBoeuf and Cayden Gonsalves (run scored) also had hits.

Softball

Case 14, Dartmouth 1

The defending Division 4 state champion Cardinals erupted for 19 hits in their win over Dartmouth. Skye Dupre had four hits, including a pair of doubles for Case (17-1). Bre Fontes also collected four hits. Ella Preston finished with three hits, including a double. Megan Smith contributed three hits, including a triple. Meg Pereira capped the scoring with two hits. Lila Alvarez and Pereira combined for win in the circle, giving up just two hits while striking out 12 batters.

Diman 13, Durfee 1

The Bengals avenged an earlier loss against Durfee at home. Courtney Boies went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Diman (11-6). Nya Martinez collected three hits, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Kacie Lynch (double, two runs, RBI), Alexah Pedder, Danielle Mello and Evey Fernandes each had a hit. Natalie Raposa drove in two runs. Ashley Carvalho went the distance, striking out batters. Mia Jacob drove in the lone run with a double for HIlltoppers (5-12) and Niyah Boone finished with two hits.

Norfolk 8, Westport 6

The Wildcats dropped a close game with Norfolk at home. Jayda Pequita had three hits, including two doubles for Westport (7-9). Julia George went 3-for-4 and Tess Silvia finished with a pair of hits, including a triple and three RBIs. Mackenzy Ponte fanned seven batters.

Boys Tennis

Durfee 3, Bridgewater-Raynham 2

Durfee 4, Bridgewater-Raynham 1

The Hilltoppers swept two matches, 8-game pro set against Bridgewater-Raynham on the road. Colin Fleet won a pair of matches for Durfee (10-4) at second singles. Tim Archambault won a match at third singles. Xavier Inacio and Chrispin Sokol took a pair of matches at first doubles. The Hilltoppers also won two matches at second doubles.

Diman 3, New Bedford 2

The Bengals edged non-league opponent New Bedford at home. Winners at singles competition for Diman (5-7) were Andrew Librera and Michael Larivee. Kaidyn Fournier and Dominic Delgado won their match at first doubles.

Bridgewater-Raynham 3, Durfee 2

Bridgewater-Raynham 4, Durfee 1

The Hilltoppers dropped a two match, 8-game pro-sets against league opponent Bridgewater-Raynham. Brook Tabicas won both of her matches for Durfee (7-6) to continue her winning streak.

Softball

Case 8, Somerset Berkley 4

The Division 4 state champion Cardinals offically clinched the South Coast Conference championship on Monday after grinding out a win over Somerset Berkley at Brown Elementary School in Swansea. Lila Alvarez collected the win in the circle for Case (16-1), combining with Meg Pereira. The duo scattered eight hits. Ella Preston and Nicole Rebelo lead the offense with two hits each. Meg Smith (two runs), Lily Picard (two RBIs), Pereira (RBI) and Alvarez (RBI) each had a hit. Samantha Comeau (two runs scored) and Julia Costa each finished with a pair of hits for the Raiders (12-6). Victoria Dematteo (sacrifice fly RBI), Lillian Brisson, Makenzie Jacob (double, RBI, run scored) and Tatum Swanson (double, RBI, run scored) all collected a hit. Swanson allowed eight hits, five earned runs and fanned four batters. SBR had a pair of double plays, defensively.

Baseball

Durfee 6, Barnstable 3

The Hilltoppers won on Senior Day against Barnstable. Jeyden Espinal, Matt Sherry, Ben Sherry and Cayden Martins each collected two hits for Durfee (16-2). Jayden Souza, Matt Almeida and Yandel Pichardo also had hits. Dylan Silveria got the win in relief and Almeida picked up the save. Keith Strong pitched two strong innings of relief in the fourth and fifth innings.

Somerset Berkley 4, Case 3, 8 inn.

Alex Crook drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Raiders to a dramatic victory against Case. With the win, SBR (13-4) clinched a share of the SCC Blue championship. Crook and Luke Thornton each had a pair of hits in the win. Dante Papaleo and Landon Richardson each threw shutout innings. William Dionne allowed two hits, an earned run while striking out five. Lucas Beaulieu led the Cardinals (9-10) with two hits. Reid Ulmschneider had an RBI while Will LeBoeuf (run scored, stolen base), Adam Gracie and Dylan Amaral (run scored) each had a hit. Jackson McLane had a game-high eight strikeouts, allowing five hits and three runs.

Boys Tennis

Westport 4, Durfee 1

The Wildcats took four of five game from non-league opponent Durfee at home. Sam Van Saun, Brody Girard and Jack Keane each swept their singles match for Westport (7-5). Ryan Keane and Zach Lopes also won at their second doubles match, 7-6, 6-2. Chrispin Sokol and Xavier Inacio won the Hilltoppers (8-4) lone match at first doubles, 6-3, 6-1. With the win, the Wildcats clinched a berth in the tournament.

Girls Tennis

Durfee 5, Westport 0

Olivia Rumsey (6-3, 3-6, 10-8), Maggie O’Connell (6-0, 6-1) and Brooke Tabicas (6-0, 6-1) each won their singles match for the Hilltoppers on Senior Day against Westport. First doubles Sydnie Duong and Gabby Farias won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 while Madi Tabicas and Teeda San won a three-set, super tiebreaking match, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5. The Wildcats (1-9) lost two matches in the third set. At first singles, Kaelyn Jones rallied after losing her first set to win her second set before falling in a third-set, super tiebreaker. At second doubles, Ella Baldwin and Gabby Juristo lost 1-6, 6-3, 6-10.

Somerset Berkley 3, Dighton-Rehoboth 2

The Raiders squeezed out a win against league opponent Dighton-Rehoboth. Julia Lanczycki (6-1, 6-1) and Ava Aguiar (6-0, 6-0) each won their singles match. The first doubles team of Kori Tickel and Josie Borden won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Boys Outdoor Track

Diman

The Bengals placed fourth out of nine teams in the Mayflower League championships. Cashton Richard had two second places, breaking the school record in the 400 hurdles (58.4) and in the javelin (141'10"). Asafe Penha took second in the 100 (11.40). Max Desroches finished second in the high jump (5-10) while Sakai Silver had a second place finish in the triple jump (39-9) and fourth in the high jump. The 4x400 relay team of Isaiah Summers, Jacob Alecrim, Jack Librera and Max Desroches placed fourth. Other top 10 finishes were Aj Gesner, Troy Davis, Jack Librera and Macauley Crossman.

Diman

The Bengals put together a great performances, taking second place overall with 105 points during the Mayflower League championships. Inez Medeiros set two school records with a first place in the 200 (26.45) taking first place and second in the 100 (12.83). Grace Flattery won the triple jump (33'9"), taking second place in the 400 hurdles (1:11) and second in high jump (5'0"). Emma Foley placed second in the triple jump (33' 6) and fourth in long jump (15'4"). Other top three finishers were Angela Njoroge 800 (2:40), Lylah Thibeault 2-mile (14:32) and Isabelle Chekares mile (6:06). Other top finishers were Katie Miranda shot put (28'7) and discus (81'4), Kaylee Lachapelle javelin (80'5), Hannah King shot put (27'5), Nicole Mota 400 hurdles (1:17), Danica Felizberto 100 hurdles (19.1) and Samantha Santos 400m (68.4). The 4x100 and 4x400 team each placed second.

Boys Volleyball

Braintree 3, Durfee 1

The Hilltoppers dropped their match against Barnstable on the road. Danny Matuszek had 32 assists for Durfee (11-7). Chris Milfort had 22 kills and 18 digs. Josh Sanon had 11 kills.
