Bills snap counts: Depth chart breakdown vs. Patriots

The Buffalo Bills got after it against the New England Patriots and ended up taking a close win, 27-21, on Sunday afternoon in Week 17.

But who exactly were the ones on the field for the Bills (10-6) doing all the dirty work against the Patriots (4-12)?

More often than not, taking a look in between the lines at snap count totals for Buffalo’s players can give us some insight as to what went down in between the lines on the gridiron.

There is always plenty to discover when looking at these finer details.

With that, here’s how the Bills depth chart broke down via snap counts in their latest win against the Patriots:

Offense

  • RB Leonard Fournette did not play after making his Bills debut in Week 16. RB Latavius Murray resumed his role behind RB James Cook. 

  • WR Stefon Diggs continued to see a drop in total snaps played and for the first time WR Khalil Shakir played more. 

  • WR Trent Sherfield’s snaps dropped from 60 percent last week to 28 vs. the Pats. 

  • OL David Edwards played in heavy packages again with 11 total snaps played. 

  • TE Dalton Kincaid out-snapped Dawson Knox after Knox had more over the past two weeks. 

  • Starters were replaced for a few late snaps, including QB Josh Allen who was briefly injured

Defense

  • The Bills had multiple surprises on their inactive list: Including CB Kaiir Elam who was activated from injured reserve, DT Linval Joseph, and DE Von Miller

  • LB Tyrel Dodson played in his highest percentage of snaps on defense in six weeks. S Taylor Rapp only played seven total snaps. 

  • In his return from a pectoral injury, DT DaQuan Jones played in 53 percent of snaps. 

  • DT Poona Ford and DT Tim Settle both played 20 total snaps with Joseph out. 

  • DE Kingsley Jonathan played 12 total snaps with Miller out.

Special teams

  • TE Quintin Morris, FB Reggie Gilliam, CB Siran Neal, LB Tyler Matakevich, CB Cam Lewis played Tier 1 special teams snaps. Neal, Matakevich, Lewis were the only ones to do so last week. 

  • With S Damar Hamlin out due to injury, S Taylor Rapp played in 66 percent of ST snaps, alongside side LB Baylon Spector and LB Dorian Williams.
